DEF Basics for RVs Built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis

Winnebago and Newmar motorhomes built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, such as the Newmar Freedom Aire and Winnebago EKKO 23B, Revel, Revel Sport, View, and Navion, are equipped with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems as a federally mandated integral part of their emissions technology. All diesel vehicles built after 2010 are required to have a DEF tank to reduce Nitrogen Oxide emissions. To ensure the performance, compliance, and reliability of your motorhome, it is important to have a complete understanding of the system and proper maintenance techniques. Continue reading our blog to learn more about DEF and its usage in a diesel Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis.

DEF Basics for Winnebago RVs on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-toxic and colorless mixture of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water and is stored in a dedicated tank. DEF is not a fuel additive, and is instead, during operation, injected into the exhaust stream where it reacts within the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapor. This process is crucial, as it significantly reduces harmful emissions and enables the vehicle to meet various environmental standards.

A vehicle that utilizes DEF for this process will be equipped with a level gauge to monitor DEF levels, and the vehicle’s instrument cluster will also provide a notification when levels are low. DEF should be replenished as part of routine fueling practices, and many truck stops provide DEF at the pump. Whenever you fill the DEF tank you must add at least 1.5 gallons in order for the level guage to update. If you leave the DEF tank empty it can cause issues with the level sensors becoming crystalized. DEF does have a shelf life that is affected by both temperature and sunlight. Sealed containers are also readily available from auto or RV parts retailers, large retail chains, and more.

Best Practices:

  • Optimal DEF Storage Temperature: 32 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit; it will freeze at 12 degrees Fahrenheit so you must take precautions to ensure it doesn’t get to this temperature
  • Storage for Future Use: Cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight
  • Quality Standards – ISO 22241 standards only
  • Handling Precautions – Avoid contact with dirt, fuel, or other fluids
  • Monitor Alerts – Do not ignore chassis alert systems

Correct handling and use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid ensures the longevity and reliability of your Winnebago or Newmar motorhome built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. Continuing the best practices for storage, handling, and refilling DEF can support long-term performance and environmental standards.
