RV Class Types Explained A, B, C

Whether you are new to RVing or perhaps new to “motorized” RVing one of the first things you’ll discover is there are different RV Classes: Class A, Class B and Class C RVs and different comforts and accessibility that come with each.

Class A RV’s

Class A

Class A RV’s are large “bus shaped RVs” with a large front windshield. Winnebago Class A RVs run in length between 28’5” (The Winnebago Vista 27P and the Winnebago Adventurer 27N) and 43’3” in the Winnebago Horizon 42Q. Winnebago offers both gas and diesel Class A models that sleep between 6-8 people.

These larger Class A Motorhome floorplans allow you to have many of the amenities of home including models with: a king sized bed, a guest bathroom (master bath plus a ½ bath), washer and dryer and ample storage space in and outside of the coach to allow you to bring the comforts from home with you (and some use the RV as their fulltime home.) Certain Class A models also include an outside entertainment area complete with a TV Entertainment System and Tailgate Package including a small kitchen with a refrigerator, a small sink and storage.

With the longer Class A RV lengths you do typically sacrifice fuel efficiency averaging 6-10 miles per gallon and are sometimes limited on where you can park/camp. Winnebago Class A Gas models include: The Winnebago Intent, the Winnebago Vista and Winnebago Sunstar, and the Winnebago Adventure each built on the Ford Chassis. Winnebago Class A Diesel models include: The Winnebago Forza and the Winnebago Horizon built on the Freightliner XCS and Maxum Chassis.

Class B RV’s

Class B

Class B Vans are typically the smallest motorized RV’s, also referred to as Campervans. Due to their petite length they are more agile than RVs in the other RV classes and can drive and park most anywhere.

Winnebago Class B RVs run between 19’7” (the Winnebago Revel) to 22’11” in length (The Winnebago Boldt). This shorter length allows Class B owners to get easily where they need to go to enjoy their next adventurer. Some Class B RV’s are available in 4WD which allows owners even more flexibility on the terrain they can travel on.

Class B RVs are also available in gas and diesel models each of which boast high fuel efficiency with 18-22mpg. They have available sleeping between 2-4 people and due to their small footprint include many creative storage solutions. Winnebago Class B RVs are equipped with a kitchen, a Wet Bath, Sleeping Area and Seating/Dining Area. Winnebago Class B Gas models include: The Winnebago Solis and the Winnebago Travato on the Dodge RAM ProMaster Chassis. Winnebago Class B Diesel models include: The Winnebago Revel, The Winnebago Era and the Winnebago Boldt all on the Mercedes Sprinter Diesel Chassis.

 Class C RV’s

Class C

Winnebago Class C RV’s fit right in between Class A and B models. They are available in the longer lengths like the Class A RVs with some of the same amenities, but many owners feel they are easier to drive than the Class A “bus style” RVs. Winnebago Class C RVs are available in both Gas and Diesel models ranging in fuel efficiency between 8-18 mpg (the diesel on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Chassis achieve 16-18 mpg while the gas powered models on the Ford Chassis tend to achieve between 8-10 mpg.)
Winnebago Class C RVs run between 24’5” (the Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit 22M) to 32’9” in length (The Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit 31H and 31K). Winnebago offers both gas and diesel Class C models that sleep between 4-8 people. All Class C floorplans provide you with a full kitchen, full bath and ample storage.

Winnebago Class C Gas models include: The Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit and the Winnebago Outlook on the Ford Chassis. Winnebago Class C Diesel models include: The Winnebago View and Navion and the Winnebago Vita and Porto on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Diesel Chassis.

The Motorhome market can seem vast, however, once you’ve determined the “Class” of RV that best fits your needs you can narrow in on the perfect RV for you.

Are RVs Easy to Drive?

Why Buy from Lichtsinn RV

Are RVs Easy to Drive? Do they require a special license?

If you are new to RVing, specifically motorhomes, you may wonder whether RVs are difficult to drive.

Motorhomes are not difficult to drive and do not require a special license to drive. The size of the motorhome can affect its driveability, but some practice and common sense driving skills will make any motorhome easy to handle. Winnebago Boldt

Here are some motorhome driving tips for new motorhome owners –

  1. Be aware of everyone around you. According to the DMV, motorhomes can actually be easiest to handle when you’re driving down the interstate. Shockingly to most new motorhome owners, the real test of your driving skills is maneuvering an oversized vehicle through city streets or in the mountains, where road-side trees and narrow, unpaved paths can make the size of your motorhome all too clear. Be conscientious of everyone around you—especially in your blind spot.
  2. Pull through parking spots. Try not to pull into any parking spots behind another vehicle. Motorhome blind spots are bigger than those of smaller vehicles, so you want to avoid backing up as often as possible. Try to pull through parking spots so you can leave the lot without backing up and risking any damage to your vehicle or someone else’s.
  3. Keep a good distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. This one is very important. The bigger the vehicle, the longer it takes to brake. If the car in front of you has to stop suddenly and you’re riding its bumper, you probably won’t be able to stop in time. To avoid fender benders and more serious accidents, keep a safe distance between you and whatever vehicles are in front of you.
  4. Be ready to brake when necessary. Once again, your motorhome’s breaks will not stop your vehicle as quickly as those on your Honda Accord. While this might seem obvious, many drivers forget to take your motorhome’s size into account. You have to be extremely vigilant and ready to brake at all times, just in case someone cuts you off and you have to slow down abruptly.
  5. Travel in a group. If you have friends with motorhomes, consider “caravaning” when you travel. This isn’t necessarily a definite principle, of course. Some drivers are exceptionally aggressive and won’t shy from a group of motorhomes. You’ll still want to remain extra vigilant and aware of the drivers around you, but cars tend to give groups of motorhomes wider berths than they would a single RV.
  6. Pay attention to the wind. Just as the wind can affect your abilities when driving a car, it can greatly impact your safety when driving a motorhome. Driving slowly when the wind is strong, and keep a good grip on the wheel. Keep in mind that the wind might even affect your motorhome more so than it would your car. Try to compensate for this extra danger with extra-precise driving skills.
  7. Remember how tall your motorhome is. Don’t just take familiar routes because they’re familiar. Your car might not have had any trouble fitting under that bridge, but your motorhome might. Take your motorhome’s height into account as you drive.
  8. Watch your acceleration. Heavy vehicles pick up speed on a downslope more quickly than light vehicles and cars, and they’re more difficult than cars to regain control of once they’ve gained speed. Keep your motorhome’s speed in check, especially when you’re going downhill.
  9. Watch out for distractions. Passengers especially pose a great danger to motorhome drivers. Not only do they talk, but they watch TV, they play cards, they cook, and they do anything else one might do in a regular home. Try to be aware as you drive your motorhome that you are infinitely more susceptible to distraction than you would be in a car.
  10. Be courteous to other drivers on the road. Not everyone on the road is going to adhere to your same rules of etiquette, so you can’t always control whether or not other drivers drive safely. You can, however, drive safely yourself and hope other drivers will follow suit.

Tips for Finding a Reputable RV Dealer: Certified Used Warranty

Whether it’s your first RV and you’ve decided the RV lifestyle is now for you or you’re a seasoned RVer ready for your next home you’ll spend a lot of time researching the perfect RV for your needs. However, the research process does not end when you’ve decided on that perfect RV, there is another important step that many people forget… finding the perfect RV DEALER to work with. Buyers will want to invest just as much time if not more, in researching RV dealers to make sure they find a reputable dealer to work with.

“There is another important step that many people forget… finding the perfect RV dealer to work with.”

Let’s face it, there are a lot of lousy RV dealerships out there. Unfortunately, in the race to find the lowest possible rig price, many people choose to buy from dealers who do not have a history of great customer service and outstanding RV repair. Know in advance that the lowest price is not usually synonymous with the best buying experience. In our blog series we will cover items you should be looking for in your RV Dealer.

Certified preowned

Preowned RV Warranty

If you are in the market for a Preowned RV there is a long list of items you’ll want to ensure are operational on the RV, in addition to your visual inspection, prior to purchasing it. However, with all of the excitement of finding the perfect RV, did you miss anything? You don’t want to spend all of that money on a “new to you” RV, only to have to turn around and spend more money once you drive off the dealer’s lot.  That’s where a Used Inventory Warranty is important, it can help protect you from unexpected issues on your previously owned RV after purchase. Does your purchasing dealer provide this type of warranty? If so, is it included or is there an additional charge to add it?

At Lichtsinn RV you can purchase a used RV with the confidence and peace of mind you would a new one!  Many of our Preowned RVs are Certified Preowned RVs. This means they include a Preowned Warranty, providing Real Value with a sixty day Service Plan from the date of purchase!  RVs that qualify for this program have passed a rigorous inspection. The Certified Preowned Warranty Plan provides major operating systems coverage for your RV protection and is accepted anywhere in the United States or Canada.  If you do end up needing to have covered work done during the warranty period, the Plan pays the service center directly once the work is completed to your satisfaction.  These Warranty Plans are also extendable.  Each Preowned RV that includes this coverage is notated on our website with our Certified Preowned RV logo. There is no additional charge for this Warranty Protection.

The RV buying process may be lengthy, but it is an exciting process and finding the perfect dealer to work with makes the experience that much more enjoyable!
