2026 marks 20 years of Winnebago leading the way in Mercedes-Benz luxury innovation with the Class C diesel, View and Navion. In 2005, Winnebago Industries introduced two motorhomes that would forever change the Class C RV market, the Winnebago View and Itasca Navion. What began as a move to build a motorhome on the European-inspired Sprinter platform quickly evolved into one of the most successful and influential diesel motorhome platforms in North America. Now, more than two decades later, the View and Navion continue to set the standard for luxury, fuel efficiency, and innovation. As we celebrate this milestone we take a look back at everything that has shaped the iconic Winnebago View and Navion.
2005
The introduction of the Winnebago View and Itasca Navion marked a turning point in the RV industry. Built on the Dodge Sprinter chassis (the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles available in North America) the View and Navion introduced RVers to a compact diesel motorhome unlike anything else on the road. At a time when larger gasoline-powered motorhomes dominated the industry, the View and Navion delivered exceptional fuel economy, drivability, and premium amenities in a more manageable size. Their success would redefine the Class C market and influence motorhome design for years to come.
2006-2010
As first production units reached dealerships, the View and Navion quickly gained traction. Built on the original Dodge Sprinter platform, these motorhomes demonstrated that RVers wanted a smaller, more efficient RV without sacrificing comfort. Winnebago expanded luxury offerings on these models, including premium full-body paint packages, upgraded cabinetry, and enhanced interior features.
A major branding change occurred in 2010 when Mercedes-Benz began selling the sprinter directly in the U.S. after the Daimler-Chrysler separation. During this time, Winnebago also expanded the floorplan offerings and introduced specialized models such as the Navion iQ for a more compact aerodynamic variation.
2011-2015
Throughout the early 2010s, Winnebago continued to refine the View and Navion with improved interiors, expanded storage solutions, enhanced slideout design, and upgraded amenities. One of the most significant advancements during this time was the introduction of larger and multiple-slide floorplans, such as the 24G. The 24G floorplan dramatically increased living space while maintaining the compact exterior dimensions that made the View and Navion so popular.
2016-2017
A significant change in the View and Navion’s history was when Winnebago began retiring the Itasca brand. For years, the Winnebago View and Itasca Navion were essentially sister coaches sold under separate brands. As the Itasca brand was phased out, the Navion name remained, transitioning to the Winnebago Navion as we know today.
This move preserved the strong recognition and customer loyalty associated with the Navion name while simplifying Winnebago’s lineup.
2018-2019
The arrival of Mercedes-Benz’s new-generation Sprinter chassis brought major improvements in safety, technology, and driving comfort. New features in the View and Navion included:
- Active brake assist
- Crosswind assist
- Attention assist
- Adaptive safety technologies
- Improved driving dynamics
The View and Navion became safer and more comfortable than ever before.
2020
For the 2020 model year, Winnebago introduced one of the most comprehensive redesigns in the View and Navion history. Refreshed models featured:
- New interior design
- MBUX infotainment technology
- Improved insulation and comfort
- Advanced safety systems
- Improved sleeping and storage solutions
2021-2024
As RVers increasingly sought remote destinations and extended travel opportunities, Winnebago responded with significant upgrades including factory-installed lithium battery systems, expanded solar capabilities, inverters, and SmartSpace floorplan innovations.
The View and Navion evolved from travel coaches to capable off-grid adventure vehicles.
2025
Twenty years after the original launch, Winnebago released perhaps the most significant redesign since the original launch. Highlights included:
- All-new 24T floorplan
- Innovative gear garage storage
- Winnebago Connect smart-coach technology
- Updated interior and exterior styling
- Expanded lithium and solar options
- New Mercedes-Benz 2.0L turbo-diesel powertrain
2026 and Beyond
In 2026, the Lichtsinn RV exclusive Winnebago View and Navion Freedom 250 Edition was released. This special addition commemorates 20 years of Winnebago leading the way in Mercedes-Benz luxury innovation and the transformative impact on the RV industry as the first North American Class C built on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis.
As Winnebago continues to innovate, one thing remains clear, the legacy of the View and Navion is far from over.
