Top Questions from our Webcast on WiFi and Cellular Boosters

RVers increasingly are looking for technology that enables them to stay connected to family and friends, work remotely, or stream media. So we covered the options for WiFi and cell boosters in one of our webcasts. Below are the top questions from our webcast. We also created a step-by-step tutorial on how to choose a wifi, cellular or combined wifi and cellular booster for your coach. See it here.

What is the best way to stream Netflix, Hulu, etc. on your RV TV?

There are a couple ways of streaming onto your TV. One of the easiest ways of doing this is using an adapter from your smartphone, tablet or computer and connect it to your TV utilizing an HDMI cord. There are also separate devices, like Blue Ray players, already connected to your TV with streaming services built in. Most Blue Ray players that come with Winnebago’s RVs have streaming services like Netflix and Hulu built in. The third way is an adaptor that is plugged into the HDMI port with the streaming services built in. Examples of these are Amazon Fire Sticks, Google Chromecast, Roku stick, and Apple TV. These range from $39.99 for the firestick to $149.99 for the Apple TV.

What considerations with the weboost you have to take into account with shorter coaches?

With the WeBoost 4GX the amplifier connects to the internal antenna and needs to be far enough away from the external antenna to prevent oscillation, but very close to the objects you are trying to boost. So a shorter coach can prove to be difficult.

Is there an additional monthly fee for the Winegard Connect 2?

There is not an additional fee if you use your own SIM card, however, if you don’t you can purchase data through Winegard.

Are there options to boost over-the-air TV options?

Yes, if you have an older coach with an older Winegard antenna you can add the Winegard RV-Wing Wingman to boost your over-the-air reception.

If someone primarily uses their computer to stream videos are they better off buying a WiFi booster or a combined WiFi and 4G Booster?

It depends on where you are planning on RVing. If you are planning on primarily staying in campgrounds with WiFi a Wifi Booster will probably be sufficient, but if you are planning on staying off-the-beaten path in campsites

RV Connectivity… Stay Connected with Cell and WiFi Options

RVers increasingly are looking for technology that enables them to stay connected to family and friends, work remotely, or stream media. So, we created a step-by-step tutorial for finding the perfect option for you. See it here.

There are 2 main ways to access friends, family and the internet while on the road:

  • Public or private accessible WiFi networks (RV parks, libraries, rest stops, Starbucks, etc.)
  • Wireless service providers (cell phone networks – Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.)

Or, you can access the internet with a combination of cellular internet and free WiFi.

Public or Private Accessible WiFi Networks – Standalone WiFi Boosters

The goal of WiFiRanger products is to enhance existing internet sources and make them more usable, while also combining these internet sources as desired for the most speed, reliability, and automatic backup. WiFiRanger products can reach weak WiFi at extreme distances and also tether to your USB MiFi, Aircard, or Smartphone.

Wifi Only

Cost of WiFiRanger products: $359 – $749 + installation

How does the WiFiRanger work?

  1. Boosted WiFi – Find 4-10x wifi networks, the WiFiRanger boosts weak WiFi from up to two miles away. Overcome the challenges of line of sight with our rooftop mounted outdoor WiFi receivers.
  2. Interconnect Everything – Hook up all your favorite devices. The WiFiRanger interconnects everything with WiFi and ethernet ports for laptops, tablets, Smart TVs, gaming consoles, printers and more.
  3. Robust Security – Secure WiFi and safe browsing mode. WiFiRanger secures your network with WPA2 encryption, firewall and SafeSurf which allows using public networks securely.

Wireless Service Providers – Cellular and Internet (4G)

RVing allows you to see the country, which often then comes with the price of poor cell phone reception due to distance from the nearest cell phone tower and objects, including your RV, that obstruct the signal.  Using your cellular phone or a cellular hot spot to provide internet can be the most economic way to stay connected via the internet as you can use your existing data and you’re not tied down to a facility with internet.  There are options for improving your cell signal so you can stay connected via voice or for using your data for internet connectivity, even when you’re in the middle of nowhere.
