What chassis is this Winnebago Class C Motorhome built on?

When considering the purchase of a Winnebago Class C RV many of our guests ask us what the benefits and features are for each chassis used in different models.   This can be useful information when deciding which motorhome best fits their needs.

Winnebago Class C motorhomes are built on chassis bases produced by two different manufacturers.  Mercedes is the chassis platform for the Winnebago Class C diesel motorhomes.  Ford makes the chassis for the Winnebago Class C gas models.

Gas Models

The Winnebago Minnie Winnie/Spirit
The Winnebago Minnie Winnie/Spirit

The Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit models use the new Ford 7.3-liter dual valve free breathing V8 chassis for all of their floorplans.  This is the premium rated engine calibration and not the optional downgraded economy 7.3-liter V8 used by other competing manufacturers offering 10% less power.  This new V8 engine is 30 lbs. lighter and 20% smaller than previous V10s and offers better fuel economy.  This powertrain offers 468 lb. ft of torque or power, 350 hp and a TorqShift six speed automatic transmission with grade braking capability. The Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit 22M and 22R are built on the Ford E350 chassis with the option to upgrade to the Ford E450 chassis found as a standard feature in the other available floorplans.

The Ford V8 chassis also now includes the following new safety enhancements:

  1. Adaptive Cruise Control – This system employs both radar and camera technology to set a cruise speed and distance from the vehicle in front of you, an especially helpful feature in slow traffic conditions.   When traffic ahead slows, you automatically do as well;  when it picks back up, you can resume  your present speed and distance.
  2. Active Distance Alert – This system maintains your distance to the vehicle ahead of you and adjusts itself based on the movement of the vehicle ahead.
  3. Forward Collision Warning – This alerts you if it senses a potential collision, displays a flash in the instrument cluster and increases brake assist sensitivity to provide full responsiveness when you brake.
  4. Lane Departure Warning – This feature uses a camera mounted behind the windshield to scan road lane markings and detects an unintended lane departure during the day or night.  When activated this alerts you in the display and provides an audible warning.
  5. Driver Alert – This feature recognizes repeated lane departures as a sign of fatigue and issues visual and audio alerts to you that it’s time to pull over and take a break.
  6. Automatic Emergency Braking – This system provides an audio alert, displays in the instrument cluster, and pre-charges and increases brake assist sensitivity to provide full responsiveness when you do brake.
  7. Post Impact Braking – This system can potentially lessen the severity of a secondary collision by automatically applying moderate brake pressure when an initial collision event is detected.
  8. Electronic Stability Control – This feature senses when you begin to lose traction and automatically applies selective braking to help prevent your vehicle from sliding and skidding
  9. Traction Control – Traction Control applies selective braking to keep your wheels from excessively spinning and helps maintain traction.
  10. Hill Start Assist – This feature activates the anti-lock brakes for up to two seconds as you transition your foot from the brake to the accelerator.
  11. Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  12. Automatic Headlamp Activation and Automatic High Beam Control
  13. Driver Monitoring
  14. Remote Keyless Entry
  15. Airbag Cutoff  – passenger side

Winnebago EKKO 4 Season RV
Winnebago EKKO

The Winnebago EKKO uses the all-wheel-drive Ford Transit 3.5L direct fuel injection, dual turbocharged Ford EcoBoost V6 chassis.  This powertrain offers 400lb ft of torque or power, 310 hp of acceleration and a 10-speed automatic SelectShift transmission with overdrive and grade braking.  Its standard all-wheel drive capability goes where many other motorhomes can’t.

The Winnebago EKKO Ford Chassis Includes the following Safety Enhancements:

  1. Blind Spot Alert – This feature can help detect and alert you to vehicles in your blind spot and can detect traffic behind you when you’re slowly backing out of a parking spot or driveway.
  2. Lane Keep Assist – Lane Keep Assist helps you by scanning the lane markings ahead on both sides of your vehicle and alerts you when you cross over a marking.
  3. Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Warning – This system uses sensors in the front of your RV to detect slower vehicles traveling in the same direction and warns you if you are rapidly approaching. When traffic ahead slows down, you automatically do too. When traffic picks back up, you can resume your preset speed and distance.
  4. Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) – The feature uses camera technology to detect a potential collision with a vehicle or pedestrian directly in front of you during day or nighttime driving. If an impact becomes imminent and you do not take corrective action, the brakes apply automatically. This system can help reduce the severity of, and in some cases can eliminate, a frontal collision.
  5. Post-Collision Braking – This technology moderately applies the brakes after a crash so the RV stops rolling and avoids a potential second accident.
  6. AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control (RSC) – This is Ford’s premium electronic stability system that improves vehicle control on all driving surfaces, including snow, ice, gravel, rain-covered roads, and dry pavement.  This system monitors the yaw and roll rates, helping you maintain control whenever it detects wheel slip, understeer, oversteer or roll motion.
  7. Automatic Rain Sensing Wipers – These wipers spring into action when they detect moisture on your windshield and then adjust their speed to deal with whatever the weather throws at you.
  8. Side Wind Stabilization – This system works by carefully applying the brakes on one side of the RV to reduce the effect of a side wind gust on the RV’s path.
  9. Hill Side Assist – This system holds your EKKO stationary for two seconds using brake pressure, giving you more time to find the right amount of revs and clutch to pull away, and once you apply pressure to the accelerator pedal, the brakes will automatically disengage.
  10. Auto High-Beam Headlights – This driver-activated system scans the road at speeds above 25 miles per hour. When you are on a very dark road with no traffic, the high beams come on. However, when a vehicle with its headlamps on is approaching up to 2,000 feet or traveling ahead of you with taillamps visible up to 500 feet, the system will dim to low beams to reduce glare and avoid hindering the other motorist.
  11. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) – This System will alert you if any tire on your EKKO is underinflated.
  12. Dual Front and Safety Canopy Side Curtain Airbags – In addition to the driver and passenger airbags the EKKO includes side-curtain airbags that deploy downward and outward toward the side-window openings to protect the heads of front passengers. Roll-fold technology helps the airbag slide between the glass and occupant as the airbag inflates.
  13. SecuriLock Anti-Theft System with Engine Immobilizer – This system is designed to prevent the engine from starting unless the correct coded key is used. The electronically encoded ignition key activates a specially designed transponder located inside your EKKO. The system disarms whenever the correct key is inserted into the ignition and automatically rearms when it’s removed.

Winnebago’s Class B Diesel Lineup

Is this Winnebago Class B 4WD?

Is this Winnebago Class B 4WD? We get this question a lot. We do have a number of RVs that are available with 4WD. Before deciding on an RV however, you may want to first ask yourself do you really need a 4WD RV? It sounds good, but will you really take advantage of the 4WD features of your RV to make it worth the additional cost that 4WD brings with it? Winnebago Class B RVs built on the RAM ProMaster Chassis are available with FWD. Winnebago Class B RVs built on the Mercedes Sprinter Diesel chassis are available in both 4WD and RWD models. You may also see 4WD RVs referred to as 4×4 RVs, four-wheel drive RVs and four-by-four RVs, all meaning essentially the same thing, a 4 wheel drive RV.

Winnebago 4WD Class B RVs

Most of the time for regular RV road driving 2WD (FWD or RWD) will be sufficient for your needs. The 4WD feature on RVs improves traction if you are truly going off-grid or plan to drive on snow, ice, rocks etc. When the 4WD is engaged, the engine sends power to the transmission, then splits the power to the front and rear wheel axles. The power/torque gets transferred to the wheels, but the wheels must have traction underneath them in order for the RV to move anywhere. For example: If you get your RV’s rear wheels stuck in mud, if you have 2WD/RWD then your wheels will probably spin and spin since there is no traction underneath them. In this case, having 4WD would be helpful so that your front wheels, that are not stuck, could get traction on the road and successfully get your RV out of a sticky situation. By engaging both sets of wheels, traction and control improves. It gives you traction where and when you need it.

The additional weight of a 4WD RV also contributes to better grip on the road. 4WD is essentially a way to increase traction and power on the road.

If after reading this you decide that a 4WD RV is the right choice for you – then we have the perfect Winnebago 4WD Class B RVs for you!

How to Winterize a Winnebago View and Navion

It’s that time of year when it may be time to put your Winnebago View or Winnebago Navion away for a winter slumber. Before you do this it is important to winterize your View or Navion.

Winnebago View and Navion Winterization

Your Winnebago View or Navion is equipped with a manually operated waterline winterization system for your convenience in winterizing fresh waterlines. The system features a Winterization (diverter) valve with an antifreeze siphon tube to draw nontoxic RV water system antifreeze into the waterlines. There is also a Water Heater Bypass valve to avoid filling the water heater with antifreeze.

Watch our video on how to winterize a Winnebago View or Navion here.

Below you will find important steps to winterize your Winnebago View or Navion:

  1. Level the Motorhome. If the motorhome is not level, there may be “low points” in waterlines that can trap water in the lines and prevent it from draining properly.
  2. Drain Fresh Water Tank and Waterlines. Open all waterline drain valves and drain fresh water tank.
  3. Drain Exterior Shower/Wash Station. Open exterior shower knobs and lay shower head on ground to drain any water left in the shower line. Also, place the tip of your finger into the city water inlet and gently press the backflow valve “button” in the center of the inlet to drain any water trapped in the inlet line. Remove Water Filter
  4. Cold Water Filter: Remove the filter canister from the Cold Water Filtration System under the galley sink and discard the filter cartridge. After emptying the canister, remount it onto the filter assembly and continue the Antifreeze Fill Procedure.
  5. Drain Water Heater (Tankless): Turn the Water Heater Power Switch (located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) to the OFF position and allow hot water to cool down.
  6. Open the latch with your thumb while pulling the Easy Drain Lever down as far as it will go.
  7. Remove the water inlet filter and clean with clean water. Leave the water filter inlet removed until the Winterization process is complete or the system is placed back in use. Set Up Winterization Valves
  8. Turn Winterization Valve 1 to BYPASS position (to avoid filling water heater with antifreeze). Water Heater Power Switch (Located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) Easy Drain Lever (Located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) Latch Easy Drain Lever
  9. Remove and save the protective cap from the end of the antifreeze siphon tube (save cap to cover tube after use.)
  10. Insert the end of the siphon tube into a pail or container with 2 to 3 gallons of non-toxic RV antifreeze solution.
  11. Turn Winterization Valve 2 so that it points to Winterize (Syphon). NOTE: Ensure that all drain valves are CLOSED before pumping RV antifreeze into the water system. Fill Lines.
  12. Turn the Water Pump switch ON.
  13. Open each hot and cold water faucet handle/ knob in the motorhome – one at a time each in turn until antifreeze solution just begins to flow from the faucet, then close. Do not forget exterior shower/wash station knobs (if equipped).
  14. Press the toilet flush pedal and hold until antifreeze begins flowing into the toilet. Leave a small amount of antifreeze that remains in the bowl.
  15. Turn Winterization Valve 3 from “Normal” position to “Line Drain” position to allow water and antifreeze to flow through the recirculation line. Note: antifreeze will drain outside of the coach during this step.
  16. Turn Water Pump switch OFF.
  17. Turn Winterization Valve 3 to “Water Heater & Line Drain” position to allow all remaining water and antifreeze to leave the system. Leave the valve in this position until the Winterization process is complete or the system is placed back in use.
  18. Turn Winterization Valve 2 so it points toward Normal. This will stop the flow from the antifreeze siphon tube and revert the tank line flow to the water pump.
  19. Replace the protective cap onto the end of the antifreeze siphon tube to keep out insects or debris when not in use. Fill Drainage System P-Traps
  20. Pour about one cup of RV antifreeze down each drain for the galley sink, lavatory sink, and shower/tub. This fills the drain trap pipes to prevent holding tank odors from entering the motorhome during storage. Dump and Clean Holding Tanks
  21. Completely drain the sewage and waste water holding tanks at an approved waste disposal site. Drain the sewage tank first so the following waste water can rinse any waste solids from the dump outlet and sewer hose.
  22. Close dump valves and refit the dust cap onto the drain outlet. This will inhibit rust formation on valve shafts and prevent entry and contamination by airborne debris, insects, and rodents.

You will find additional information on how to winterize your Winnebago View or Navion in your RV Owner’s Manual.
