Tips for RVing in the Fall

Don’t give up on the RVing season yet! RVing in the fall is a terrific time to get out and enjoy the cooler temps!Hiking in a Winnebago View

  1. Pack Layers – Fall is prime season for unpredictable weather. You can check the daily weather forecast and try to prepare for it, but need to that conditions changing is always a possibility. Packing clothing layers helps with fluctuating temperatures throughout the day, from cool mornings to warm afternoons and chilly nights. This tried-and-true strategy allows the whole family to stay comfortable by adding or removing layers the weather or your activity level changes.
  2. Fill Up Your Propane – Don’t leave home without a full tank of propane. We all know that nothing uses up propane in the RV more than the heater, and you’re going to need it at night. While many campgrounds offer propane, they charge a premium for the convenience.
  3. Properly Inflate Tires – This is often an overlooked item, but you’ve got a lot riding on your tires. Did you know that for every 10 degrees of temperature drop, your tires can lose one to two pounds of pressure? It is important to keep your tires within the recommended inflation to maintain traction, handling and durability. The most important thing is the safety of you and your family. We also tend to pack quite a bit of gear, and under-inflation has an impact on carrying capacity, which is the greatest amount of weight your vehicle can safely haul.
  4. Be Prepared for Shorter Camping Days – We get spoiled camping in the summer with long stretches of daylight and have to be prepared to adjust for our fall trips. The first consideration is arrival time at the campground. No one likes to set up their campsite after dark. Things can get tricky when you can’t see well. Plan ahead to be sure you’re taking the earlier sunset into account. Try the weather channel app to get the accurate sunrise and sunset times. Also, pack a few flashlights or lanterns in case you’re unexpectedly delayed. Even better, a good headlamp allows you to have full use of your hands while lighting your way.
  5. Get Ready for the Campfire – One of the best ways to enjoy cooler evenings is sitting around the warmth of a campfire. Obviously, every good fire needs some s’mores, so pack the graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate. Even more importantly, don’t forget the sticks!
  6. Take a Trip Close to Home – You don’t have to travel far to have fun! If the kids are in school or you can’t get away from work, you can still enjoy an amazing weekend camping trip close to home. You may feel like you know your local area pretty well, but sometimes we miss the hidden treasures right under our noses. Even better, staying close to home with save you money on one of the most expensive aspects of RV travel: fuel.

Fall is a great time to pack up the RV and enjoy a great weekend of camping!

Family-Friendly Fall RVing Destinations

There are several family-friendly destinations for RVing. We chose some of our favorites from across the United States!

Winnebago View RVing in the Fall

Steamboat Springs, CO – Catch the changing of the leaves in all their glory in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Nestled in the Yampa Valley, Steamboat Springs is an unspoiled mountain town where your trip is more affordable than Aspen or Vail, but offers similar breathtaking views.

Steamboat Springs offers two year-round hot springs. Strawberry Park Hot Springs is located seven miles from downtown Steamboat and is surrounded by yellow aspens during the fall. There are multiple pools with various temperatures. Old Town Hot Springs features eight natural mineral pools, 230-foot water slides and a fitness center. Located downtown, this location promises family fun for everyone.

As for outdoor activities, a variety of trails are perfect for hikers and bikers alike, while the Yampa River is a fly-fishing haven. The Steamboat Lake State Park offers trout fishing below Hahn’s Peak. The 4-mile Emerald Mountain Quarry Trail offers glimpses of Mt. Werner and the downtown area. Or find yourself on top of the Continental Divide on the six-mile Rabbit Ears Peak Trail.

Looking to relax? Downtown Steamboat offers dining and shopping options for all tastes.

Quechee State Park, VT – The East Coast is known for its colors in the fall, and to leave an East Coast destination off an autumn list of RV trips just wouldn’t be right. One of the best places to view the changing leaves is Quechee State Park.

While you are there take in the views of the Quechee Gorge. Vermont’s deepest gorge, formed by glacial activity about 13,000 years ago, you can view the Ottauquechee River flowing 165 feet below. The river offers brook trout, rainbow trout and brown trout fishing, as well as the Quechee Gorge Trail.

Visit the nearby Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences (VINS) Nature Center which offers live special educational bird programs, exhibits, nature trails and avian rehab in action. Another nearby attraction is Sugarbush Farm. Visit a working Vermont farm that offers free admission, free samples and the chance to visit with real farmers. Those who left reviews recommend trying the maple syrup and cheese

Willamette Valley, OR – Visit Willamette Valley, Ore., for a taste of all things fall. Willamette Valley truly celebrates the autumn season, with festivals and events nearly every weekend. Septemberfest, Sublimity Harvest Festival, Oktoberfest, Barn Dance at the Oregon Garden and Corvallis Craft Beer Week are just some of the events that take place.

For those who enjoy a glass of vino, the Carlton Winemakers Studio in Willamette Valley is a must stop. A communal concept, various boutique winemakers use the space to create unique and experimental wines with state-of-the-art equipment, while sharing the cost of production.

Other wineries such as August Cellars, Day Camp and Southeast Wine Collective are just a few of the options for travelers to stop in. Aside from a great glass, vineyards create a beautiful autumn landscape.

Coloma, MI – Take a trip to Coloma, Mich., where you’re near Lake Michigan and fall fun. At Lake Michigan you can relax on white sand beaches, visit lighthouses or spend the day kayaking and paddle boarding. If you’re feeling adventurous, travel the Paw Paw River Water Trail that runs 66 miles through a wildlife rich floodplain forest corridor through Van Buren and Berrien Counties.

In the heart of Michigan’s fruit country, visit u-pick farms, fruit markets, and enjoy picking apples from an orchard and a cup of cider. There are also award-winning vineyards nearby. Take everyone to Jollay Orchards, a family friendly farm where kids and parents alike can enjoy the best fruit Michigan has to offer.

Glacier National Park, MT – Many people think visiting Montana means a trip through Yellowstone National Park. And while that is a great trip to take, one of Montana’s lesser-known jewels is Glacier National Park.

While you’re there, make sure you travel Going-to-the-Sun Road. The road spans 50 miles, crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. While on the road you will see glaciers, valleys, waterfalls, mountains and colorful wildflowers. Most visitors also witness wildlife sightings on the trip.

Glacier offers hiking, ranger-led programs, guided tours, beautiful scenery for photographers, biking, fishing, boating and other special events depending on the time of the year. Since the high elevations here can mean early snow, Glacier National Park makes a perfect early fall destination – keep this in mind when planning.

Special places to visit in the park include Lake McDonald Valley, Many Glacier, St. Mary, Two Medicine, North Fork and Goat Haunt.

Whether you are ready for it or not, the Fall Season will soon be upon us. Just because the temperature is changing doesn’t mean your RVing fun needs to come to an end. In the fall, depending on your location, freezing temps in the morning, can turn into mid 70’s by afternoon, so you need to be prepared for a little bit of everything!

4 Hidden Places to Find Extra Storage in Your RV

Post originally seen on DoItYourselfRV.com

Most of us have a lack of imagination when it comes to how we use our homes, and this extends into the world of RVs as well. We tend to accept the storage we’re given, and outside of purchasing shelving or containers, we don’t get very creative when it comes to where to put our things.

In an RV, this can lead to over-crowded drawers and important gear that cannot be found until after an alternative has already been used. Here are four under-utilized areas that can make great storage when coupled with the right hardware!

  1. On the Inside of Doors – Wall space for hanging items is always at a premium inside an RV, but there are likely multiple areas that represent several square feet each on the back of every room door and cabinet door inside your motorhome or travel trailer. Whether you choose a pocket caddy for your shower goodies on the bathroom door or Command adhesive hooks from 3M for utensils inside the kitchen cupboard, there are a variety of tools at your disposal. One really cool idea I like is a trash can that mounts to the inside of your under-sink cupboard! Homemade Door Storage for Bug Spray and Flip-Flops – You might also make your own inside-the-door storage area from some wooden furring strips and bug mesh. Maybe you have some spare trim laying around the garage or in the basement? Cut it to length and screw a few pieces into the wood on the back of the door. Then take some mesh and tack it underneath to form a handy and sturdy storage pocket.
  2. Make Use of Your Ceilings – Depending on how your RV is constructed, you can use screw in or adhesive hangers to mount items up and out of the way, but still close enough to get to when needed. The ceiling of a utility space is great for hanging brooms, mops, and other long items such as fishing poles. Over-the-sink hanging baskets can provide great travel-safe storage for produce or other small kitchen items. In the bathroom, hanging shelves or baskets can organize soap, shampoo, and loofahs. If you think of what you use in each space of your RV, ideas will come.
  3. Build In More Drawers – Inside the walls of your RV, there are pockets of unused space. One such location is inside dinette benches. While many allow for drop-in storage from the top, adding full extension guides and drawer boxes can make this space more usable since it doesn’t require dismantling your dining area to access it! Small slide-out and drawer units can also be found for under your tabletops and cabinets to add small spaces for important items that otherwise just get jumbled in with everything else.
  4. Create Usable Space Under Your Mattress – Many RVs do make use of this space (at least partially) with hidden drawers. In many cases, however, the center part of the space under the mattress is completely unusable.

Whether you add drawers, or a hinged platform to lift the mattress up and out of the way, this is a great place for items that stay stored until used and are not typically packed away until it’s time to break camp. Things like outdoor furniture, tents or canopies come to mind. If you live in your RV, this is also a great place for seasonal item storage.

5 Easy Ways to Personalize Your RV

Post originally seen on DoItYourselfRV.com

Everyone wants their home to feel like their home. Even their home on wheels! One of the best parts about RVing vs. staying in hotels is having your home and your things along for the ride. It is so nice going out and exploring all days and coming “home” at night.

Since RVs tend to come with little personality, it’s up to you to make the space your own. Some choose to completely renovate the inside of their RV to make it truly theirs, but there are small changes you can make that’ll make a huge difference. Here are five ways to personalize your tiny home on wheels.

1. Wall Decor – The walls of an RV are pretty bare. Unless you are lucky enough to get a rig with a stylish border, the walls are probably plain. (Side note, you CAN remove the wallpaper border with little effort!) A super simple way to personalize your RV is to spice up the walls. With family photos, artwork, hanging plants, etc. There is no need to put holes in the walls of your rig. Command Hooks are the perfect way to hang decorations on the walls. The adhesive works great at keeping hooks in place on travel days and will not leave a track on the wall when you’re ready to remove. Command Hooks come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, making it easy to hang virtually anything, no matter the shape or weight. In case you do hit some unsuspected bumps in the road, consider using plastic when possible, especially with picture frames. Nothing will ruin your day quicker than finding broken glass spewed across your floors when you open the front door after traveling.

2. Indoor and Outdoor Rugs – Just like in a stationary home, rugs in your RV can bring the space to life. They make a room feel extra cozy and are an easy way to add your personality. Consider adding a rug or two to your RV to make it your own. Rugs will not only look great as they cover up less than aesthetically pleasing linoleum flooring or carpet, but they are also functional. Rugs can help keep warmth in a while camping in cooler weather. A rug in the living area can make for a great place for young kids to play or lay while watching a movie. A welcome mat at the front door is a great place for wiping dirty feet or storing shoes. A runner in the hallway can make a nice transition piece for the living area to the bedroom. Don’t worry too much about rugs getting dirty as they are so easy to clean. Roll them up, take them outside, and give them a hard beat. Cleaning is done!

3. RV Bedding – Is there anything better than climbing into your own bed at the end of a long day? That’s one of the best parts of RV travel! Give your bedroom or sleeping area a personal touch by updating the bedding. There isn’t much when it comes to RV bedrooms, so the bedding is going to make or break the look and feel of the space! Go for something bright and light to make the room feel larger. Add some throw pillows to make your sanctuary feel extra luxurious and comfy. Want to go the extra mile, spend the extra buck, and make all of your RV bedroom dreams come true? Upgrade the mattress while you’re at it! A new mattress might not make your space look any more personalized, but you better believe it will feel more personalized. Standard RV mattresses aren’t the most comfortable things on earth, and getting a good night’s sleep is essential when camping. A good mattress that matches your sleeping style is the best way to get a good night’s rest.

4. Curtains – What is the deal with the cornices or valances found in most RVs? They don’t necessarily provide any value, and we all know they don’t look good. Luckily, they are pretty easy to remove. With just a few twists of the screwdriver, those ugly window treatments are history! Once the old window treatments are down, replace with curtains and a rod. New curtains are a great way to personalize your RV! You can purchase curtains in a variety of lengths, but hemming curtains too long is a quick fix if necessary. When hanging your curtain rod, consider placing it several inches above the window if possible. This will give the illusion of the wall being taller, making your space feel roomier. Concerned that curtains won’t provide enough privacy? Opt for thick black-out curtains. You can also add blinds under curtains for added privacy.

5. Light Fixtures – RVs come with fairly basic light fixtures. Lighting usually consists of a mixture of dome lights, outdated ceiling light over the dinette, and puck lights. If you are looking to give your motorhome a more personalized look and add some style, updating light fixtures could be just the thing! Just changing out a light or two in each room can make a huge difference. While you are at it, change out old light bulbs for LED lights. This will help you save on energy and keep your lights cooler.

If you are looking to make your tiny home feel more like, well, home, there is no reason to spend a fortune or break your back doing a full renovation. Making a few simple changes can go a long way and make you feel proud of your space.

Winnebago SmartSpace Design

With so many RV manufacturers out there, how do you narrow down the right manufacturer and then the RV that is right for you? An important question to understand is what kind of company stands behind your RV. Winnebago Industries was incorporated in 1958 and since that time has been a leader in the RV industry. With a focus on Quality and Innovation Winnebago’s Customer centric approach is one that continues to make it a leader in the RV industry.

One of the many Innovations from Winnebago is the Winnebago SmartSpace Design.

SmartSpace Design innovations allow you to enjoy industry-first technology. Winnebago’s advanced parts supply system coupled with superior craftsmanship results in Winnebago Motorhomes being built with safety in mind and quality you can trust.

Two major components of Smart Design are SmartSpace and SmartStorage.

SMART

SMARTSPACE

The SmartSpace design philosophy encourages the use of innovative features to make the most efficient use of the available space in each coach. This design philosophy has led to the creation of features such as the BenchMark Dinette and the U-Shaped Dinette each with hidden storage compartments below the bench seats that can easily be converted into a sleeping space, unique pull out pantries and full-extension drawer slides found in many of the motorhome galley areas and the Flex Bed system allowing you to quickly and easily convert the living space or bedroom into different bed configurations. These are just some of the many innovations that have come about from the SmartSpace design philosopy.

Also included in the SmartSpace design process is molded component manufacturing. Winnebago builds their own rotational molded components manufactured in Winnebago’s Rotocast facility. Having the ability to manufacture components like water tanks, luggage compartments, heat ducts, and wheel wells in their own facility allows them to maximize space, ensure optimal weight distribution, and make spare parts available years down the road.

SMARTSTORAGE

Smart Storage is a better way to store your gear. It places bulky systems and tanks in improved configurations, leaving more room to maximize available basement storage. Exterior storage is also easy to access with innovative features such as a large trunk with multiple access doors and sliding storage trays on select models. Other features you might find include a storage well with drain plug, a compartment cover that converts into a picnic table, and tie downs to secure your items in place in open storage areas.

You’ll find a variety of SmartSpace and SmartStorage features across the entire Winnebago Motorhome lineup. Winnebago Smart Design is just one of the many reasons why Winnebago is the Motorhome manufacturer of choice for many RVers.

The Little Things that Make Winnebago a Superior Motorhome

What is Azdel Onboard?

Azdel Composite Panels are produced using a patented blend of polypropylene and fiberglass to create a strong, lightweight, quiet, weather and temperature resistant, odorless and environmentally friendly wall that will increase the life of your RV.

What is Luan? Luan is an RV trade name for underlayment plywood traditionally found in your motorhome wall. Often, the smells, mold and mildew that we all associate with water damage in a motorhome are the result of damaged luan. Azdel is a superior material that does not mold or mildew and has since replaced luan.

Benefits of Azdel Onboard –

  • Half the weight of wood: Azdel composite panels are lightweight yet durable. Half the weight of wood – just think of the fuel-savings.
  • Free of Formaldehyde, Mold and Mildew: Azdel composite panels do not grow mold, mildew, or emit toxic fumes. So you can breath easy with piece of mind as you travel in your Winnebago.
  • Water Resistant – No Delamination, No Rot: Water will not cause fiber decomposition on our composite panels, so there is no rot or warping. Wet/dry cycles can affect wood bonds and diminish structural integrity.
  • Temperature and Humidity Changes are Tolerated: Azdel composite panels are not damaged from freezing and thawing cycles, a common cause of delamination. Temperature and humidity changes are well tolerated.
  • Sound and Energy Absorbing: Azdel panels are porous which allows them to absorb sound waves instead of being transferred through vibration of wood panels. You are in for a quieter ride.
  • Puncture and Impact Resistant: Azdel composite panels are durable and stay strong. No adhesive failure from fluctuating temperatures can occur to weaken bonds.

Azdel Onboard is only one of the few reasons why Winnebago is the Motorhome manufacturer of choice for many RVers.

Your Winnebago Operator’s Manual

Winnebago believes the more informed you are about your motorhome, the more you’ll enjoy it. So Winnebago includes a comprehensive Operator’s Manual that features key safety, operating and service information, along with helpful photos and illustrations. Then we go a step further.

Winnebago includes a custom-printed Operator’s Manual Supplement specifically for each coach that includes the information and operating instructions for all the components and accessories in that motorhome — everything from the refrigerator to the water pump. Better yet, the Supplement is cross-referenced to the Operator’s Manual, making it easy to find exactly the information you need.

Winnebago is the only manufacturer in the RV industry that organizes and prints this information specifically for each coach. And you’ll be happy to know that should your unique Operator’s Manual or Supplement ever need replacing, it can simply be ordered like any other part.

Winnebago also has an extensive online collection of resources, including service tips, frequently asked questions, and supplier links.

Winnebago’s Operator Manual is just one of the many reasons why Winnebago is the Motorhome manufacturer of choice for many RVers.
