Sprinter Platform On the Rise

Article Originally Appeared on RVPro

Russ Garfin, director of product management for Class B and C motorhomes at Winnebago Industries, still vividly recalls back in 2006 when he showed the company’s first Sprinter-based Class C to his district sales managers.

“That was our first serious effort at a more European-style of a Class C motorhome. They all liked it but were nervous whether it would sell or not. They all said that’s pretty cool-looking – but it’s too expensive,” he recalls.

“‘It’s fun to have something new, but who’s going to buy it?’ they asked,” he says now.

Winnebago’s View and Navion – the first Class C’s ever built on the Sprinter chassis for the North American market – did attract buyers and stood for years as the top-selling brand in their class.

The rest of the industry eventually began building on the Sprinter platform and slowly caught up, however, necessitating a new review of the market. The result of that review at Winnebago is a new series comprised of the Vita and Porto, built on a Sprinter chassis that is 13 inches shorter than the View/Navion and retails for some $25,000 to $30,000 less.

“We’ve given customers another choice,” Garfin says simply. The difference between View/Navion and Vita/Porto is basically in the level of amenities offered between the two products.

“Something we still do better than anybody else is we provide more carrying capacity, so whether it’s a Vita or Porto or even a View or Navion, if you equip them the same as competitor coaches, you’re always going to find more carrying capacity in a Winnebago motorhome and that’s because we design in weight savings.

“Our styling on the 2020 View and Navion is gorgeous with all-new walnut and white interiors and an all-new front cap,” Garfin says. “From top to bottom, we’re second to none as far as appointments and in comfort.”

How will these new brands fare in the current marketplace?

“I think it was the right decision, but it’s too early to say how successful it will be,” says Garfin. “A lot of people shopping for a Winnebago motorhome on a Sprinter chassis are going to consider a new View or Navion first before they look at anything else. It’s going to take a little bit of time for the new brands to build some momentum, but we’re seeing that. We’ve made quite a few upgrades to the interiors and the exteriors on the Vita and Porto since we launched it with options like full-body paint, theater seating and hydraulic leveling jacks, which are well-received features. It really did change the position on our dealers’ lots.”

By the start of 2020, Winnebago Sprinter brands were gaining traction in the marketplace, Garfin stresses. “We are confident we will grow our share.”

Like all RVs, floorplans are king. Leading the way for Winnebago is View and Navion’s 24D floorplan, the No. 1-selling Sprinter floorplan in North America, featuring a full-size slide with a Murphy bed.

“People really like the openness of that full-size slide. When the Murphy bed is up, you have a couch and a big, U-shaped lounge so you have lots of seating and dining choices,” Garfin says.

Following the 35th Annual Florida RV Supershow in Tampa in January, Garfin reported, “We saw excellent response to our new Sprinter products, retailing the new Boldt, Vita and View models starting with the first day of the show. Our Sprinter sales well surpassed our sales at this show last year.”

“The View and Navion created the Sprinter market here – and even though the market has a ton of more competitor models, with everyone looking to mirror Winnebago’s success – we are now gaining momentum with our new products and we expect Winnebago’s identical sister brands the View and Navion will continue leading the market going forward,” Garfin says.

15 Reasons we love the Winnebago Boldt

There is so much to love about the Winnebago Boldt, a Winnebago Class B Campervan built on the Mercedes Benz VS30 Sprinter Chassis. The Boldt comes with available 4WD and is the first fuel efficient Mercedes Benz VS30 Van partnered with the Pure3 Volta Power Systems Lithium Energy System, providing a generator free stealth like #VanLife experience.

The energy and fuel-efficient Winnebago Boldt, diesel-powered Camper Van is equipped with ample storage and spacious floorplans, making it the perfect blend of innovation and comfort.

Winnebago Boldt

Listed below are the top features we love in the Winnebago Boldt.

  1. Taking full advantage of the proven Mercedes Benz VS30 Sprinter Chassis, the Boldt’s 3.0 litre turbo diesel provides 325 lb ft of torque and 188 hp. It includes a seven speed automatic 7G Tronic Plus Transmission with grade braking.
  2. An additional benefit of the Mercedes Benz VS30 Sprinter Chassis is the many active and passive Safety Features that are included with it. These safety features include: Active Brake Assist – In case of any oncoming danger, Active Brake Assist warns drivers and if necessary, will brake for them. As a class leading feature, it is the only system that can recognize and respond to pedestrians. Active Distance Assist Distronic – In high traffic areas, Active Distance Assist Distronic keeps enough distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you to ensure optimal safety. Active Lane Keep Assist – If a driver is ever to unintentionally drift or leave their designated lane, Active Lane Keep Assist immediately alerts them. Traffic Sign Assist – Throughout travel, speed limits can be ever-changing. Traffic sign assist helps to identify the correct speed and adjust accordingly. Blind Spot Assist – Including Rear Cross Traffic Alert:  Blind Spot Assist provides warnings regarding vehicles in the blind spot while Rear Cross Traffic Alert warns about crossing objects when reversing. Crosswind Assist – Detects strong gusts of crosswind and helps to stay on course. At speeds over 50 mph it corrects the vehicle’s course by means of automatic braking intervention on the wheels on the side of the vehicle facing the wind.
  3. The Boldt’s Pure3 Advanced Energy Management System, powered by Volta Power Systems, is an automotive-grade lithium system similar to what is seen in electric vehicle applications. The Pure3 system begins with a 48V energy pack that provides 11,600 watt-hours of energy.  The energy pack is watertight, durable, and encased in a steel housing that is the safest on the market, and batteries are climate controlled. The Pure3 provides complete 30 Amp, whole coach electricity using a 3,600-watt pure sine inverter. The Boldt’s dedicated 58V alternator, or under hood generator, is twice as powerful as competitors. Its compact design keeps it out of the way of curbs and road debris and provides quick recharge time.
  4. The Boldt comes with two 115-watt solar panels and a junction port for additional portable solar. The MPPT Solar Controller provides best in class solar absorption, up to 30 percent better than competitors, giving you more off the grid performance.
  5. An industry leading 5 Years/ 100,000 Mile Warranty on the Boldt’s engine and transmission provides you piece of mind as you head down the road.
  6. The Winnebago Boldt is Winnebago’s first true 4-Season RV. Equipped with Automotive Grade Insulation the Winnebago Boldt boasts an R-Value of 4.4 per square inch. The Winnebago Boldt insulation is odor-free and won’t settle as you go off road and in loose terrain. The Winnebago Boldt’s insulation is built for longevity of the RV.
  7. The Winnebago Boldt’s LED High Performance Headlights improve illumination, maximizing the view of the road ahead while further enhancing the Boldt’s overall aesthetic with a sleek front end design.
  8. The MBUX Infotainment System in the Winnebago Boldt makes trips more enjoyable with the multitude of sophisticated MBUX infotainment optional features, including an oversized 10 inch touchscreen, wireless charging, USB and USB C connections, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. It also includes advanced GPS navigation built right in.  The MBUX Hey Mercedes voice guidance and artificial intelligence services are also included. It features touch steering wheel controls and MBUX touch control buttons. These are touch sensitive controls on the steering wheel for instrument cluster and infotainment system control, similar to a smart phone interface, which respond to vertical and horizontal swiping movements.
  9. The Winnebago Boldt has a Power Sliding Cargo Door with Keyless Entry and Interior Control Buttons making getting in and out of the side door of the coach a breeze.
  10. The Winnebago Boldt is equipped with a Connectivity Port for WiFi and a Cellular Booster.
A multimedia system WiFi Hotspot will help you to easily go online with mobile devices. The Internet in the Car service requires a Mercedes PRO account, additionally a contract must be made with a 3rd party mobile network operator.
  11. The Winnebago Boldt comes with an optional expansive Rooftop Mounted Storage Rack solution and Multi Point Accessible Ladder for convenient rooftop access.
  12. Creative Storage Solutions are found throughout the Winnebago Boldt interior. These solutions include RAM Tough-Track Mounts and under bed storage.
  13. Each Winnebago Boldt floorplan includes a Flex Bed System which allows for quickly and easily converting the “living area” into a “sleeping area.”

8 Reasons We Love the Winnebago Vita

There are so many reasons to love the Winnebago Vita! Find our top 8 reasons to love the Winnebago Vita below.

See our Winnebago Vita inventory here.

  1. Two functional floorplans – The Winnebago Vita is available in the 24F and the 24P. Both the 24F and 24P floorplans have at least 40-cubic-feet of exterior storage and can sleep someone up to 6’4’’ (even at the dinette, thanks to the hidden bonus leg room space)! Winnebago has also consciously made especially large galleys, and even the bathroom door of the 24P gives extra space in the bathroom once closed. One of the main differences between the two floorplans is where the slide is located. In the 24F, the dinette is in the slide and in the 24P, the bed is in the slide. To pull in the slide in the 24P, you would fold the hinged mattress beforehand – making the bathroom still accessible without putting the slide out.
  2. Extended Off-the-Grid Functionality with Best-in-Class holding Tanks – You can go off-the-grid for longer with the Vita’s best-in-class holding tank capacities including 37 gallons of fresh water, and 41 gallons of black and gray tank capacities – 35% more than the competitors.
  3. 200-Watts of Solar Standard – In conjunction with the best-in-class holding tanks, the Vita comes with 200-watts of solar power… STANDARD. The 200-watts of solar help keep your batteries fully charged and extend off-the-grid use. The Vita and Porto’s solar system is also expandable up to 450-watts. Most RVs in this segment come with solar prep or solar as an option for an additional fee.
  4. Bring More with You – OCCC and Storage – You will not run out of storage in the Winnebago Vita! The Vita was created with full-timers in mind. The 24F floorplan features 42-cubic-feet of lighted, exterior storage and the 24P features 45. The Vita also has the occupant cargo carrying capacity to be able to safely bring it with you. The OCCC is listed on the required yellow weight label that you can find inside one of the entry doors to the motorhome. The OCCC figure is the maximum allowable weight for all occupants, food, tools, and personal belongings, including the weight of all the fresh water that you carry. Even the weight you put on the hitch must be included in your cargo calculation and the total must be less than the OCCC for safe operation of your RV. Based on the option and floorplan selection, the View and Navion typically provide well over 1,000 pounds, while the new Vita and Porto were designed to provide up to 1,800 pounds of capacity.
  5. Comfortable Sleeping for 6 – Both Vita floorplans feature comfortable sleeping for 6. New to the Vita is the SuperShell Sleeper Deck. Winnebago’s exclusive SuperShell composite hull is produced in a closed mold with injected urethane foam sandwiched between the fiberglass outer shell and an interior panel. This manufacturing method is similar to how a high-end cooler is constructed. This superior design strengthens the cab over area and improves sound and thermal comfort while also reducing the weight and the potential for leaks and squeaks. The design also reduced the number of parts and processes necessary to build the cab-over, improving quality and durability for our owners.
  6. Budget-Friendly Coach – Winnebago is constantly interviewing owners and keeping a pulse on how the RV market is changing. The Vita is the answer to RVers wanting a motorhome option that is easy for first-time RVers to drive and use, can handle being on the road often, and is capable of boondocking, moochdocking, and other dry camping for extended periods. They’ve also made multiple upgrades to make this RV less likely to need service work. Since many first-time RVers are also looking at lower-priced RVs, Winnebago wanted to create this option to fit their needs without going over budget.
  7. Customizable Storage – The Winnebago Vita features customizable storage including the pantry and linen cabinet. The pantry features removable rods and shelves to customize the space to your needs. So, you could use it as a food pantry or a closet of clothes, etc. The linen cabinet of the 24F also provides additional and easily accessible storage for towels or other supplies.
  8. And last, but certainly not least, is the Mercedes Benz Diesel Chassis that the Winnebago Vita is built on. The Mercedes Chassis provides the Winnebago Vita with unrivaled fuel efficiency and durability.

The Lichtsinn RV Experience starts from the moment you pick up the phone or chat with us online and extends throughout the lifetime of your RV ownership. Your dedicated Lichtsinn RV Sales, Service and Parts team members will support you along every step of your RV journey.

We are proud to have been named by Winnebago Industries as the Top North American Winnebago Dealer for the past 5 consecutive years. 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. This means Lichtsinn RV has sold more Winnebago Motorhomes than any other Winnebago dealership across the entire country.

Winnebago Flying W Award

Lichtsinn RV receives it’s Top Dealership Award for 2019. Pictured here L-R Heidi Thompson (Lichtsinn RV General Manager), Ryan Helgeson (Winnebago Sales Representative), Hope Lichtsinn (Owner), Ron Lichtsinn (Owner/Dealer Principal)

But what does this really mean to you?

For those that haven’t visited our dealership before, we are located in Forest City, Iowa, just 1 mile from the Winnebago Factory. We are in a small town, in northern Iowa. Some may ask, how is it possible that the top selling Winnebago Dealer in North America is located in such a small town?

For those that aren’t familiar with Lichtsinn RV, they might think this is due to location. We are just 1 mile from the Winnebago Factory, so new Winnebago Motorhomes purchased from our dealership come with no delivery miles or tow car stress on them. We do not use delivery services like other dealers in which drivers live in the RV during transportation. No one will eat, drink or live in your new investment or tow their own personal car with it during the manufacturer recommended crucial break in period.

However, No Delivery Miles is just one of many reasons why people travel across the country to purchase their motorhome from Lichtsinn RV. Additional reasons our guests say they travel across the country to Lichtsinn RV include:

  1. Winnebago is the only new line of motorhomes we carry, so our entire team, from sales to parts to service, specializes in Winnebago product. Our factory trained sales and service teams receive regular Winnebago product training and are afforded the opportunity to review new product and model year changes up front. We are specialists in Winnebago product. When spending that much money on an RV, wouldn’t you want a team that can help answer any questions you have before, during and maybe most importantly, after an RV purchase?
  2. We include a half-day Educational Orientation with every RV purchased from Lichtsinn RV. Many dealers charge up to $600 for this, however, we provide this complimentary as we feel you’re making an investment, we want you to know how to use it! During this Educational Orientation we will ensure you know how to use your RV by covering each switch, feature and all maintenance and warranty items. We encourage our guests to stay at our campgrounds at least one night after they have purchased an RV. We have electrical hookups on site and then we are just outside your doorstep the next day to answer any questions that may have surfaced overnight.  Use of our campgrounds is complimentary to guests who are here to purchase an RV or are here for an RV service appointment.
  3. Being located just 1 mile from the factory, many of our guests enjoy taking a Winnebago Factory Tour while they are here to see how their RV was made and see the quality craftsmanship that goes into each and every Winnebago motorhome. The Winnebago Factory Tour is held April-October. Reservations outside of this timeframe can be made directly through a Lichtsinn RV Sales Consultant.
  4. Then there is the final item, Price. Lichtsinn RV has cost efficiencies over other dealers that allows us to provide up-front, no-hassle pricing. We work with several National Lenders to provide you the best rate and terms on your RV purchase. There are no additional fees to purchase an RV in Iowa as you will pay the tax and license fees in your home state. Many of our guests without a trade, find that they can fly here and purchase an RV for significantly less than they can their local dealer.

The above reasons are just a few of why guests throughout the USA and Canada come to Lichtsinn RV for their RV Purchase, many traveling thousands of miles, making Lichtsinn RV the Top North American Winnebago Dealer. However, don’t take our word for it, see what our guests have to say about their experience with our 5 star reviews on Facebook and Google.

How to Winterize a Winnebago View

Your motorhome is equipped with a manually operated waterline winterization system for your convenience in winterizing fresh waterlines. The system features a Winterization (diverter) valve with an antifreeze siphon tube to draw nontoxic RV water system antifreeze into the waterlines. There is also a Water Heater Bypass valve to avoid filling the water heater with antifreeze. Leave Water Heater Bypass valve in NORMAL FLOW position if draining water and blowing out waterlines. Place in BYPASS position ONLY when using antifreeze solution in waterlines.

Watch our video on how to winterize a Winnebago View here.

  1. Level the Motorhome. If the motorhome is not level, there may be “low points” in waterlines that can trap water in the lines and prevent it from draining properly.
  2. Drain Fresh Water Tank and Waterlines. Open all waterline drain valves and drain fresh water tank.
  3. Drain Exterior Shower/Wash Station. Open exterior shower knobs and lay shower head on ground to drain any water left in the shower line. Also, place the tip of your finger into the city water inlet and gently press the backflow valve “button” in the center of the inlet to drain any water trapped in the inlet line. Remove Water Filter
  4. Cold Water Filter: Remove the filter canister from the Cold Water Filtration System under the galley sink and discard the filter cartridge. After emptying the canister, remount it onto the filter assembly and continue the Antifreeze Fill Procedure.
  5. Drain Water Heater (Tankless): Turn the Water Heater Power Switch (located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) to the OFF position and allow hot water to cool down.
  6. Open the latch with your thumb while pulling the Easy Drain Lever down as far as it will go.
  7. Remove the water inlet filter and clean with clean water. Leave the water filter inlet removed until the Winterization process is complete or the system is placed back in use. Set Up Winterization Valves
  8. Turn Winterization Valve 1 to BYPASS position (to avoid filling water heater with antifreeze). Water Heater Power Switch (Located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) Easy Drain Lever (Located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) Latch Easy Drain Lever
  9. Remove and save the protective cap from the end of the antifreeze siphon tube (save cap to cover tube after use.)
  10. Insert the end of the siphon tube into a pail or container with 2 to 3 gallons of non-toxic RV antifreeze solution.
  11. Turn Winterization Valve 2 so that it points to Winterize (Syphon). NOTE: Ensure that all drain valves are CLOSED before pumping RV antifreeze into the water system. Fill Lines.
  12. Turn the Water Pump switch ON.
  13. Open each hot and cold water faucet handle/ knob in the motorhome – one at a time each in turn until antifreeze solution just begins to flow from the faucet, then close. Do not forget exterior shower/wash station knobs (if equipped).
  14. Press the toilet flush pedal and hold until antifreeze begins flowing into the toilet. Leave a small amount of antifreeze that remains in the bowl.
  15. Turn Winterization Valve 3 from “Normal” position to “Line Drain” position to allow water and antifreeze to flow through the recirculation line. Note: antifreeze will drain outside of the coach during this step.
  16. Turn Water Pump switch OFF.
  17. Turn Winterization Valve 3 to “Water Heater & Line Drain” position to allow all remaining water and antifreeze to leave the system. Leave the valve in this position until the Winterization process is complete or the system is placed back in use.
  18. Turn Winterization Valve 2 so it points toward Normal. This will stop the flow from the antifreeze siphon tube and revert the tank line flow to the water pump.
  19. Replace the protective cap onto the end of the antifreeze siphon tube to keep out insects or debris when not in use. Fill Drainage System P-Traps
  20. Pour about one cup of RV antifreeze down each drain for the galley sink, lavatory sink, and shower/tub. This fills the drain trap pipes to prevent holding tank odors from entering the motorhome during storage. Dump and Clean Holding Tanks
  21. Completely drain the sewage and waste water holding tanks at an approved waste disposal site. Drain the sewage tank first so the following waste water can rinse any waste solids from the dump outlet and sewer hose.
  22. Close dump valves and refit the dust cap onto the drain outlet. This will inhibit rust formation on valve shafts and prevent entry and contamination by airborne debris, insects, and rodents.

Why Winnebago: Rotocast Holding Tanks

Winnebago has several manufacturing methods that cause customers to choose Winnebago over other RV manufacturers. One method is Winnebago’s rotational molded components manufactured in Winnebago’s Rotocast facility. Having the ability to manufacture components like water tanks, luggage compartments, heat ducts, and wheel wells in their own facility allows them to maximize space, ensure optimal weight distribution, and make spare parts available years down the road. Rotocast Facility

In the Rotocast facility, polyethylene powder is placed into specially shaped molds. These molds are heated, changing the powder to liquid, rotated to distribute the liquid evenly, and cooled to produce the hardened seamless parts. Winnebago produces more than 3.5 million pounds of rotocast goods annually, each component designed to precisely fit its specific application. And because we own the molds, we know parts will be available for years to come.

Winnebago Motorhome Quality: Four Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Why Winnebago: Steel Corrosion Protection

Winnebago utilizes extensive amounts of steel in the manufacturing of their motorhomes for strength and durability. It is critically important to Winnebago to protect the steel against corrosion using an electrocoating or e-coating process. This system is unique to Winnebago and keeps Winnebago best-in-class in quality.

Watch our video on the e-coating system here.

E-Coating Process

Critical steel structural components are processed through a multi‑stage full immersion electrocoating (e-coating) system. E-coating is also used by leading automotive companies to protect their vehicles from corrosion. The e-coat system processes pieces and parts through a 10-stage, full-immersion electrocoating system. The first 7 stages are used for pre-treatment and involve cleaning, treating (with a nano-ceramic conversion coating) and deionized for conductivity. The final three stages are used for the e-coat and rinse cycles. Electro-deposition is accomplished by charging the components with electricity, and then paint film is bonded to the body to a desired thickness. Many of our competitors apply a simple spray-on paint that doesn’t reach or protect nooks and crannies.

Winnebago’s e-coating process provides owners a quality advantage and extends the life of their motorhomes. It is just another reason why Winnebago is better than the rest.
