First Look: Inside the 2022 Winnebago EKKO

Since the Winnebago EKKO was first announced in November of 2020 we’ve all waited in anticipation to get inside this exciting new RV.

The EKKO is a first-of-its-kind motorhome.  It combines the size of a Class C coach with the maneuverability of an all-wheel-drive campervan.    It also features a robust solar powered system and many other off-the-grid features.  With four-season insulation it’s truly a different kind of RV.

We’ve seen photos and videos but most of those were of pre-release models.   We recently obtained a few photos that were released by Winnebago of the new EKKO.

While the first units are still on the assembly line we thought we’d share these photos as an early look of what to expect when they begin rolling out to customers.

Top ten questions on the Winnebago Solis 59P and 59PX from Lichtsinn RV LIVE

Are you considering purchasing a new or used Winnebago Solis 59p or 59X?   If so, we’ve gathered some of the top questions from a recent Lichtsinn RV LIVE presentation.

Winnebago Solis 59PX with pop top

Which chassis does the Winnebago Solis use?

The Solis 59P is based on the Ram ProMaster chassis 2500 Series.  The PX utilizes the 3500 series chassis.  Both models feature the same 280 horsepower  3.6L V6  engine and drivetrain.

What colors are available?

The Winnebago Solis is available in Deep Cherry Red, Brilliant Silver, Summit White and a limited-edition Granite Metallic (PX only)

Are both models available with pop-top?

Both the 59P and 59PX are available with or without the pop-top studio loft.

Winnebago Solis 59PX with pop top

Can I get air conditioning for my Solis?

The 59PX features the Coleman®-Mach® 10 NDQ air conditioner with directional vents installed as standard equipment with or without the pop-top.  The 59PX comes with the air conditioning installed standard.  The 59P has a 13,500 BTU air conditioner as an available option, however, it is only available without the pop-top.

Are both models available with generator?

The 59PX comes standard with the Cummins Onan® QG 2800i gas generator.  The generator is not available on the 59P but many people use a quiet portable generator to provide power for the campervan.

Does the Winnebago Solis have solar power as standard equipment?  Is a lithium power system available?

If you opt for the overhead pop-top studio loft, the Solis comes with a standard 220-watt flexible surface solar panel to recharge the the dual 12V AGM deep cycle batteries.  The non-pop top Solis versions include a 170-watt solar panel.  Either setup is expandable up to 450 watts with additional panels.  A lithium option is not available from the factory, but our service team is experienced in installing aftermarket lithium power systems.

Winnebago Solis 59P with pop top

What is the weight limit of the overhead pop-top sleeping area?

The overhead studio loft is limited to 440 pounds.  The ladder to the loft supports up to 220 pounds.  The murphy bed is also rated for 440 pounds.

Is there a difference between the 2021 and 2022 Solis models?

There are no model year differences.

If you delete the pop-top in the 59P or the 59PX do you get a fan?

If you aren’t interested getting the pop top you will receive roughly a $6200 dealer cost credit.  Non-pop top units will be equipped with the Maxx Air premium vent system.  The fan is in a sealed marine rain hood so you can leave the vehicle and not worry about rainfall penetration.  It’s thermostatically controlled so it opens and operates to cool your RV automatically.

Does the Solis come with a spare tire?

The Solis comes with a tire-inflation repair kit as standard equipment but there are aftermarket options to mount a spare tire on the rear doors of the Solis.

Winnebago EKKO Top 7 Off-Grid Ready Features

The Winnebago EKKO, with the enhanced capability of AWD, creates not just a new model, but an entirely new type of RV. The EKKO is built on the Ford AWD Transit Chassis and includes enhanced safety features. This all-weather and all-season RV is built with adventure at its core and off-grid adventure on its mind. The AWD EKKO is a power-house for rugged adventures and allows you to go off-grid when adventure awaits.

EKKKO Off Grid

We have compiled our favorite Top 7 Off-Grid Ready Features found in the Winnebago EKKO.

  • Cummins Onan QG 2800i Gas Generator – The new Cummins Onan 2800i ultra low quiet and ultra fuel-efficient generator is compliant with National Park allowed noise levels. This generator is extremely fuel efficient. It is fuel injected and achieves this by operating at 2400 to 2900 rpms compared to 3600 in prior model levels. The new generator has a smaller footprint and a lighter weight at 113 pounds versus the previous models at 125 pounds. The new generator can power the high efficiency ducted air conditioning system in the EKKO at approximiately 0.2 gallons per hour or five hours on a single gallon. At night since air conditioners rarely operate in a 100% duty cycle the generator should power a typical energy efficient high efficiency ducted air conditioning system with less than two gallons of fuel for the entire night.
  • (1) 320-Amp Hour Lithium-Ion Battery with the option to add (1) additional 320-amp hour Battery – The standard Lithionics battery with a 320-amp hour battery provides 4133-watt hours of usable technology. This is paired with a Cummins Onan 2800i ultra low quiet ultra-fuel efficient generator and supplies fuel off of the top three quarters of the fuel tank. The combined dual batteries provide a total of 640-amp hours (8,266-watt hours) which then deletes the available generator and provides a sealed storage compartment where the generator would have otherwise been located.
  • (2) 170-Watt and (1) 115-watt solar panels (455 Total Watts) – Camp almost anywhere with the EKKO’s 455-watts of Solar allowing you to go off-grid for extended periods of time.
  • 2,000-watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter – This inverter powers the AC, microwave and all outlets in the Winnebago EKKO.
  • Dedicated Second Alternator to Charge Coach Batteries – The Balmar XT-Series under the hold alternator found in the Winnebago EKKO has a state-of-the-art design to generate exceptional output in the smallest possible area. It provides power of 170 amps and charges the lithium coach batteries at a peak rate of 2,000-watts.  While stationary the alternator, at idle, provides 100-125 amps of power to charge up to 1,700-watts delivering incredible charging power in a compact, RV friendly package. It includes dual fan cooling and a high airflow frame and will recharge the Lithium Batteries in under 2 hours.
  • Large Tank Capacities – Large Tank Capacities allow extended off-grid usage.
    1. 50 gal. Freshwater
    2. 51 gal. Gray
    3. 40 lbs. LP
    4. 31 gal. Fuel
  • Cassette Toilet – Cassette toilets offer a portable tank that you can remove from your EKKO. It is the size of a small suitcase and comes with rollers. This portable black tank can be emptied virtually anywhere—public restrooms, dump stations, etc. so you don’t need to rely on a dump station as you would with a black tank.

The Winnebago EKKO combines the efficiency of a camper van, the added capacity of a Class C coach and the enhanced capability of AWD. Find out more about the Winnebago EKKO from a Lichtsinn RV Consultant today!

Top 10 Reasons to Buy a Winnebago Class B Camper Van

Winnebago EKKO Ford Transit Chassis Safety Features

Combining the efficiency of a camper van and the capacity of a Class C coach, the EKKO takes the phrase “big things in small packages” to a whole new level. Blending the off-road rugged nomadic nature of van life with the storage and livability of traditional touring class motor homes, the all -new, all-season Winnebago EKKO provides unmatched off-grid and all-season capabilities.  Its standard all-wheel-drive capability goes where other motorhomes can’t, yet with its van size, is easy to drive and easy to park.

The EKKO foundation begins with the fuel efficient, safety enhanced Ford Transit chassis. This chassis provides 3.5L direct fuel injection, a dual turbocharged Ford EcoBoost V6 engine, 400 lb ft of torque or power and 310 hp of acceleration. The Ford Transit Chassis includes a 10-speed automatic Selectshift transmission with overdrive and grade braking. The EKKO’s standard on-demand AWD engages when it detects slippage and sends torque or power the wheels that need them and doesn’t when it’s not needed to improve fuel economy.  The EKKO includes a second under-the-hood alternator to recharge the lithium battery/batteries in under 2 hours. The EKKO has independent front suspension and electric power assisted steering. The EKKO has Up to 1,500 lb occupant and cargo carrying capacity.

Winnebago EKKO Chassis Safety

The Winnebago EKKO Ford Chassis Includes the following Safety Enhancements:

  1. Blind Spot Alert – This feature can help detect and alert you to vehicles in your blind spot and can detect traffic behind you when you’re slowly backing out of a parking spot or driveway.
  2. Lane Keep Assist – Lane Keep Assist helps you by scanning the lane markings ahead on both sides of your vehicle and alerts you when you cross over a marking.
  3. Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Warning – This system uses sensors in the front of your RV to detect slower vehicles traveling in the same direction, and warns you if you are rapidly approaching. When traffic ahead slows down, you automatically do too. When traffic picks back up, you can resume your preset speed and distance.
  4. Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) – The feature uses camera technology to detect a potential collision with a vehicle or pedestrian directly in front of you during day or nighttime driving. If an impact becomes imminent and you do not take corrective action, the brakes apply automatically. This system can help reduce the severity of, and in some cases can eliminate, a frontal collision.
  5. Post-Collision Braking – This technology moderately applies the brakes after a crash so the RV stops rolling and avoids a potential second accident.
  6. AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control (RSC) – This is Ford’s premium electronic stability system that improves vehicle control on all driving surfaces, including snow, ice, gravel, rain-covered roads, and dry pavement.  This system monitors the yaw and roll rates, helping you maintain control whenever it detects wheel slip, understeer, oversteer or roll motion.
  7. Automatic Rain Sensing Wipers – These wipers spring into action when they detect moisture on your windshield and then adjust their speed to deal with whatever the weather throws at you.
  8. Side Wind Stabilization – This system works by carefully applying the brakes on one side of the RV to reduce the effect of a side wind gust on the RV’s path.
  9. Hill Side Assist – This system holds your EKKO stationary for two seconds using brake pressure, giving you more time to find the right amount of revs and clutch to pull away, and once you apply pressure to the accelerator pedal, the brakes will automatically disengage.
  10. Auto High-Beam Headlights – This driver-activated system scans the road at speeds above 25 miles per hour. When you are on a very dark road with no traffic, the high beams come on. However, when a vehicle with its headlamps on is approaching up to 2,000 feet or traveling ahead of you with taillamps visible up to 500 feet, the system will dim to low beams to reduce glare and avoid hindering the other motorist.
  11. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) – This System will alert you if any tire on your EKKO is underinflated.
  12. Dual Front and Safety Canopy Side Curtain Airbags – In addition to the driver and passenger airbags the EKKO includes side-curtain airbags that deploy downward and outward toward the side-window openings to protect the heads of front passengers. Roll-fold technology helps the airbag slide between the glass and occupant as the airbag inflates.
  13. SecuriLock Anti-Theft System with Engine Immobilizer – This system is designed to prevent the engine from starting unless the correct coded key is used. The electronically encoded ignition key activates a specially designed transponder located inside your EKKO. The system disarms whenever the correct key is inserted into the ignition and automatically rearms when it’s removed.

Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity (OCCC) -This is the total weight of all cargo which includes all of your gear, you, and the freshwater tanks full. This is approximately 1,500 lbs on the Winnebago EKKO and will vary by optional content.

The unloaded vehicle weight rating + the occupant and cargo carrying capacity = the EKKOs’ gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). 11,000 lbs.

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) – This is the absolute maximum weight of the  Winnebago EKKO + any trailer or vehicle towed behind it. GCWR is the unloaded vehicle weight rating + the occupant and cargo carrying capacity+ any towed vehicles (GVWR + any towed vehicles. )15,000 lbs.

Towing Capabilities – The EKKO has a factory installed 5,000 lb. tow package. However, keep in mind if your RV is fully loaded, using all of your OCCC, up to a full GVWR of 11,000 lbs. that you are still limited to the GCWR of 15,000 lbs. So, your trailer or towed vehicle should not exceed 4,000 lbs. (GCWR 15,000 – GVWR 11,000.)

Some additional weights you may see if you were to weigh your EKKO are the gross axle weight rating for the front axle and the rear axle which are 4,630 lbs. and 7,275 lbs. respectively.

With the efficiency of a camper van (15-17 MPG highway), the added capacity of a Class C coach, and the enhanced capability of AWD, the EKKO Class C gas motorhome from Winnebago is going to change the way you travel!

Winnebago Revel Lithium Ion Battery Use Best Practices

The Revel Class B diesel motorhome by Winnebago allows you to travel down roads others might not even try! This off-road capable camper van is built on the 4WD version of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis with features such as a power lift platform bed that raises up to reveal a spacious gear garage, a cassette-style toilet to minimize weight, and many more innovations giving outdoor enthusiasts so many choices all while going off-road and off-grid. The Winnebago Revel is equipped with (2) 125-amp-hour Lithium ion batteries with a dedicated second alternator to charge the system to extend your off-grid use.

Revel Lithium Ad Photo

The Winnebago Revel’s 125AH Lithium Ion Batteries are the only Made in the USA battery management system. Some key features to this battery include:

  • 25% more capacity than the competition,
  • Ability to crank engines
  • Reserve Capacity = 10% Reserve
  • High and low voltage cut off
  • High and low temperature control
  • Bluetooth Connectivity and App

Listed below you will find best practices maintaining your Winnebago Revel Lithium Ion Batteries.

TURN BATTERIES ON:  The Xantrex battery switch is located above the back of the dinette on the wall. Flashing lights on the panel indicate that the batteries are charging. Depending on the state of the batteries, the lights will flash in different sequences. Rapid flashing indicates the battery is using reserve power and should be re-charged.

CHARGE BATTERY SYSTEM (Driving) – Do not turn the batteries off while vehicle is on. There is a one minute delay between starting the engine and the alternator engaging. The alternator will engage and charge the batteries when they are between 12.8v and 13.1v. The alternator stops charging once the house batteries have shown sustained voltage of 14.2v.

  • Shore power – Make sure the batteries are turned on and plug in to shore power to charge using the 30amp connection on the outside of the coach.
  • Solar – With the batteries on, ensure the solar disconnect switch is turned to the on position. This switch is located between the Xantrex battery switch and the Zamp solar controller on the wall behind the dinette. The 215w Zamp solar panel is a trickle charger to help keep batteries topped off.

DOWNLOAD THE LITHIONICS APP

Search in the App Store or Google Play store “Lithionics Battery Monitor” and download the free app. The batteries can be monitored through the app after being connected via Bluetooth.

INVERTER/CHARGER

The inverter disconnect switch must be turned on to allow the batteries to be charged through shore power. Generally, this switch should remain in the “on” position at all times. The disconnect switch is located on the rear most panel on the driver side in the back of the coach near the floor. To activate the inverter or to use the outlets or A/C, turn the inverter on at the panel located above the solar controller on the wall behind the dinette.

LOW POWER

When the batteries shut down due to low charge, they can be turned back on in “reserve” to operate the coach but should be recharged before they shut down again. Reserve is the last 10% of the batteries’ capacity. Running through the reserve power to shut down again is abusive to the batteries.

COLD WEATHER USE

  • Turning off – If the coach is going to be stored in cold weather, it’s best to have the system charged 50% or more.
  • Temperature of batteries – The batteries are equipped with heating blankets to warm them in cold temperatures. There’s a switch in the battery compartment to turn them on and off. Use this switch to control battery temperatures when in cold weather. The blankets are thermostatically controlled when on. The blankets start heating when the temperature sensor is 35°F and will turn off when it reaches 45°F. Below 0°F, batteries will not charge or discharge. Plug into shore power. Warm the batteries up manually (space heater, park in a heated building, etc). When the batteries warm above 0°F, the heating blankets will take over warming the batteries. Between 0 and 32°F the coach can be operated on battery power, but batteries will not take a charge. Use the heating blankets to warm the batteries above 32°F to resume charging.

The Winnebago Travato and Solis Cummins RV Generator Onan QG 2800i

The Winnebago Travato and the Winnebago Solis each provide a number of great off-grid features, including the generator that is available in select floorplans in each.

Winnebago was the first manufacturer in the industry to use Onan’s new Quiet Generator, which is about 10 decibels quieter than previous models. The Winnebago Travato 59G | 59K and the Winnebago Solis 59PX were the first products in the RV industry to use this revolutionary new generator.

Some RVers may choose Lithium for its quiet performance, for those that are conscientious about your impact on the environment yet don’t want to make the investment in Lithium, the Quiet Onan 2800i Generator is a great option.

Generator Set Performance

2800i Generator set will start and run one 13500 BTU high efficiency air conditioner (15.5 Amps or less) plus 600-watt base load with an additional 300-watts of power available. This Generator should be able to power an efficient air conditioner at about 0.2 gallons per hour, or 5 hours on one gallon. At night, since A/Cs rarely operate 100% duty cycle, the generator should power a typical energy efficient RV A/C all night with about 2.0 gallons of gas or less.

Testing for RV Application

  • Tested at extremes of temperature -20 degrees Fahrenheit to 120 degrees Fahrenheit for starting and operation
  • Tested in high humidity conditions
  • Tested in salt spray conditions
  • Tested in heavy airborne dust conditions
