Winnebago’s Class B Diesel Lineup

Is this Winnebago Class B 4WD?

Is this Winnebago Class B 4WD? We get this question a lot. We do have a number of RVs that are available with 4WD. Before deciding on an RV however, you may want to first ask yourself do you really need a 4WD RV? It sounds good, but will you really take advantage of the 4WD features of your RV to make it worth the additional cost that 4WD brings with it? Winnebago Class B RVs built on the RAM ProMaster Chassis are available with FWD. Winnebago Class B RVs built on the Mercedes Sprinter Diesel chassis are available in both 4WD and RWD models. You may also see 4WD RVs referred to as 4×4 RVs, four-wheel drive RVs and four-by-four RVs, all meaning essentially the same thing, a 4 wheel drive RV.

Winnebago 4WD Class B RVs

Most of the time for regular RV road driving 2WD (FWD or RWD) will be sufficient for your needs. The 4WD feature on RVs improves traction if you are truly going off-grid or plan to drive on snow, ice, rocks etc. When the 4WD is engaged, the engine sends power to the transmission, then splits the power to the front and rear wheel axles. The power/torque gets transferred to the wheels, but the wheels must have traction underneath them in order for the RV to move anywhere. For example: If you get your RV’s rear wheels stuck in mud, if you have 2WD/RWD then your wheels will probably spin and spin since there is no traction underneath them. In this case, having 4WD would be helpful so that your front wheels, that are not stuck, could get traction on the road and successfully get your RV out of a sticky situation. By engaging both sets of wheels, traction and control improves. It gives you traction where and when you need it.

The additional weight of a 4WD RV also contributes to better grip on the road. 4WD is essentially a way to increase traction and power on the road.

If after reading this you decide that a 4WD RV is the right choice for you – then we have the perfect Winnebago 4WD Class B RVs for you!

How to Winterize a Winnebago View and Navion

It’s that time of year when it may be time to put your Winnebago View or Winnebago Navion away for a winter slumber. Before you do this it is important to winterize your View or Navion.

Winnebago View and Navion Winterization

Your Winnebago View or Navion is equipped with a manually operated waterline winterization system for your convenience in winterizing fresh waterlines. The system features a Winterization (diverter) valve with an antifreeze siphon tube to draw nontoxic RV water system antifreeze into the waterlines. There is also a Water Heater Bypass valve to avoid filling the water heater with antifreeze.

Watch our video on how to winterize a Winnebago View or Navion here.

Below you will find important steps to winterize your Winnebago View or Navion:

  1. Level the Motorhome. If the motorhome is not level, there may be “low points” in waterlines that can trap water in the lines and prevent it from draining properly.
  2. Drain Fresh Water Tank and Waterlines. Open all waterline drain valves and drain fresh water tank.
  3. Drain Exterior Shower/Wash Station. Open exterior shower knobs and lay shower head on ground to drain any water left in the shower line. Also, place the tip of your finger into the city water inlet and gently press the backflow valve “button” in the center of the inlet to drain any water trapped in the inlet line. Remove Water Filter
  4. Cold Water Filter: Remove the filter canister from the Cold Water Filtration System under the galley sink and discard the filter cartridge. After emptying the canister, remount it onto the filter assembly and continue the Antifreeze Fill Procedure.
  5. Drain Water Heater (Tankless): Turn the Water Heater Power Switch (located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) to the OFF position and allow hot water to cool down.
  6. Open the latch with your thumb while pulling the Easy Drain Lever down as far as it will go.
  7. Remove the water inlet filter and clean with clean water. Leave the water filter inlet removed until the Winterization process is complete or the system is placed back in use. Set Up Winterization Valves
  8. Turn Winterization Valve 1 to BYPASS position (to avoid filling water heater with antifreeze). Water Heater Power Switch (Located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) Easy Drain Lever (Located behind water heater access panel on exterior of the motorhome) Latch Easy Drain Lever
  9. Remove and save the protective cap from the end of the antifreeze siphon tube (save cap to cover tube after use.)
  10. Insert the end of the siphon tube into a pail or container with 2 to 3 gallons of non-toxic RV antifreeze solution.
  11. Turn Winterization Valve 2 so that it points to Winterize (Syphon). NOTE: Ensure that all drain valves are CLOSED before pumping RV antifreeze into the water system. Fill Lines.
  12. Turn the Water Pump switch ON.
  13. Open each hot and cold water faucet handle/ knob in the motorhome – one at a time each in turn until antifreeze solution just begins to flow from the faucet, then close. Do not forget exterior shower/wash station knobs (if equipped).
  14. Press the toilet flush pedal and hold until antifreeze begins flowing into the toilet. Leave a small amount of antifreeze that remains in the bowl.
  15. Turn Winterization Valve 3 from “Normal” position to “Line Drain” position to allow water and antifreeze to flow through the recirculation line. Note: antifreeze will drain outside of the coach during this step.
  16. Turn Water Pump switch OFF.
  17. Turn Winterization Valve 3 to “Water Heater & Line Drain” position to allow all remaining water and antifreeze to leave the system. Leave the valve in this position until the Winterization process is complete or the system is placed back in use.
  18. Turn Winterization Valve 2 so it points toward Normal. This will stop the flow from the antifreeze siphon tube and revert the tank line flow to the water pump.
  19. Replace the protective cap onto the end of the antifreeze siphon tube to keep out insects or debris when not in use. Fill Drainage System P-Traps
  20. Pour about one cup of RV antifreeze down each drain for the galley sink, lavatory sink, and shower/tub. This fills the drain trap pipes to prevent holding tank odors from entering the motorhome during storage. Dump and Clean Holding Tanks
  21. Completely drain the sewage and waste water holding tanks at an approved waste disposal site. Drain the sewage tank first so the following waste water can rinse any waste solids from the dump outlet and sewer hose.
  22. Close dump valves and refit the dust cap onto the drain outlet. This will inhibit rust formation on valve shafts and prevent entry and contamination by airborne debris, insects, and rodents.

You will find additional information on how to winterize your Winnebago View or Navion in your RV Owner’s Manual.

How to De-Winterize a Winnebago View and Navion

Should I get a Diesel or Propane (LP) RV Generator?

When purchasing a Winnebago View or Winnebago Navion one of the many questions we receive is, “Should I get a diesel generator or propane generator?”

There are two types of Onan generators offered by Winnebago Industries in the Winnebago View and Winnebago Navion line up, one LP and one diesel. These generators each allow you to power them with the push of a button, inside your RV.

Winnebago View and Navion Generator

The most common generator found in the View and Navion is the 3,600-watt Cummins Onan MicroQuiet LP (Propane) generator which is standard on all Winnebago View and Navion models.  The Mercedes Benz chassis that the Winnebago View and Navion are built on has a standard 12 gallon propane tank to power items throughout the coach including the LP generator.  The actual LP fill capacity is 80% of the listed amount due to an overfill prevention device on tank.

The burn rate for the propane generator is .5 gallons an hour on full consumption @ ½ load and .7 gallons and hour at full consumption @ full load.  The 3,600-watt Cummins Onan Propane generator weighs just 176 pounds and is compact in size.  This generator meets National Park Service sound level requirements of (60 dB(A) @ 50 ft.)

The other generator option offered by Winnebago Industries in the Winnebago View and Winnebago Navion line up is the 3,200-watt Cummins Onan Diesel Generator.  The burn rate for the Cummins Onan diesel generator is .3 gallons an hour fuel consumption @ ½ load and .4 gallons an hour fuel consumption @ full load.  The 3,200-watt Cummins Onan diesel generator weighs 205 pounds and is slightly louder than the propane generator.

When deciding between the Onan Propane Generator and the Onan Diesel Generator the best thing to do is to ask yourself how you’re planning on using your RV? Each fuel option has its own advantages. The LP generator in the View and Navion has a lower initial cost than the diesel. It is also smaller and lighter weight than the diesel option. However, diesel generators have a longer engine life and consume less fuel. The diesel generator also shares a common fuel system to your coach and the convenience of operating your generator from the coach’s main fuel supply.

Ultimately, the best generator for you will depend on how you plan on using it and your own personal preference. If you know you’re going to be using your View/Navion for traveling and will be plugged in most days/nights then there’s no reason to spend the extra money to upgrade to a diesel generator.  However, if you do a lot of dry camping and you know you will be using your Onan Generator quite a bit then the additional expense of the diesel generator may make sense.  If you are a previous owner of an RV one of the best ways to judge what type of  Generator you will need is to look at how many hours you had on your previous RV’s generator.  If you notice you have a lot of hours (hundreds of hours) then you might want to consider a 3,200-watt Cummins Onan Diesel generator.  However, if you find you have very few hours on your generator then you would want to consider the standard 3,600-watt Cummins Onan LP Generator.

Below is a table to easy reference some of the differences between the 3.200-watt Cummins Onan Diesel Generator and the 3,600-watt Cummins Onan Propane Generator

Battle of the B’s: The Winnebago Travato Standard vs. Lithium

Reviewing Winnebago’s Campervan Lineup

As new and seasoned RVers flock to America’s highways and campgrounds, Winnebago’s best-selling Class B Vans are leading the pack. As the largest Winnebago dealer in North America, we receive a lot of questions on the differences between Winnebago’s popular campervan lineup. Winnebago’s current Class B-Van lineup includes the Solis, Travato, Revel, Era and Boldt. In this video we will compare the specs and features on each of the five models.

Watch our video reviewing Winnebago’s Campervan LineupSOLIS HEADER

First, we have the Winnebago Solis. The Solis is a highly adaptable and affordable adventure vehicle built on the gasoline-powered RAM ProMaster chassis. The Solis is available in three floorplans – the 59P, 59PX and the newest floorplan Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A. The 59PX is built on the extended RAM ProMaster chassis allowing for a gear garage and room for an air conditioner on top of the unit with the pop-top. The 59P floorplan can only support an air conditioner without the pop-top option. Both the 59P and 59PX feature an optional pop-up roof top, flexible seating options, solar panels expanding up to 520-watts, a simplified water system and premium insulation. The Winnebago Solis 59P and 59PX offers comfortable sleeping for four people, between the rear Murphy+ bed and the pop top and offers 3-point seat belts for 4 people. The Pocket floorplan measures just 17’10” in length. It features a flexible living space with an innovative dinette that can be used in one of 5 ways.  The Pocket sleeps up to 3 people with the Murphy+ Bed and the dinette converted to sleeping mode.

Winnebago Travato

Next, the Winnebago Travato. The extremely popular Winnebago Travato has been at the forefront of the vanlife movement since it began. The Travato is built on the gasoline-powered RAM ProMaster chassis and available in 4 floorplans – the 59G, 59GL, 59K, and 59KL.  The 59G and 59GL have been redesigned based on extensive voice-of-customer research. Winnebago removed the passenger side bench seat and added two automotive-grade seats with 3-point seatbelts and a dinette table. The 59G and 59GL also feature the innovative WinnSleep system that combines a comfortable, hygienic foam mattress with a European suspension system to increase comfort. The 59K and 59KL feature several upgrades for improved usability including a slideout galley extension, the new WinnSleep system, pop-up power outlets, and a reconfigured wardrobe to maximize storage. The Pure3 lithium system in the 59GL and 59KL features a 3-module lithium-ion energy pack with a new optional fourth battery bringing the usable watt-hours to 12,000 versus 9,000 with the 3-module. The Pure3 Energy management system comes with a 3,600-watt inverter and 215-watts of solar with the option for expansion. Winnebago used extensive voice-of-customer research to redesign America’s most popular campervan with cutting-edge technology and features to improve guests’ experience.

Moving from campervans built on the RAM ProMaster chassis, we will review Winnebago’s campervans built on the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis.

REVEL

First, we have the Winnebago Revel. The 4×4 Revel has a function-fueled design with the freedom of 4WD to go off-road and off-the-grid. The Revel is available in one floorplan, the 44E. The Revel has features that allow owners to stay off-the-grid longer and live comfortably including: ergonomic comfort, easy-to-maintain surfaces, exterior flexibility, a rear bed that is on a power lift for sleeping at night and space for gear during the day. The Revel is now lithium equipped with the Lithionics (2) 125 amp-hour Lithium ion batteries, providing 1,600-watt hours of energy per battery or 3,200-watt hours total. The Revel comes with a 2,000-watt inverter and a solar panel with charger. The Revel is the shortest of all of Winnebago’s diesel campervans and has the highest ground clearance for exceptional off-road capabilities.

ERA HEADER

The next campervan in Winnebago’s lineup is the Winnebago Era – the original Winnebago campervan. The Era is designed to be reliable and powerful with on or off-road capabilities and premium interior styling. The Era is available with the optional 4WD Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis or the standard rear wheel drive Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. The Era is available in three floorplans – the 70A, 70B, and 70X. The Era comes with a chef-friendly kitchen with elegant Corian countertops, a two or three burner cooktop with glass cover, microwave or microwave-convection oven, stainless steel sink, and compressor-driven refrigerator. The Era provides the most spacious Class B van from Winnebago measuring at 24 feet long and is available with an on-demand 4WD option.

Winnebago Boldt

Finally, we have the Winnebago Boldt. The Winnebago Boldt is the epitome of stealth, off-the-grid campervans. The Boldt is built on the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis with the option of a 4WD chassis. The Boldt pairs the Pure3 Energy Management System with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter VS30 chassis providing owners with a generator-free RV. The Pure3 Energy Management system in the Boldt features a 48-volt energy pack providing 12,000 watt-hours of energy. This allows for complete 30-amp coach electricity using a 3,600-watt pure sine wave inverter. The Pure3 system is charged by the 58-volt second alternator or under the hood generator and the (2) 115-watt solar panels with battery charger. The Boldt is available in the 70BL and 70KL floorplan. The key differences in the floorplans are the bathroom location (rear bathroom in the KL and mid-coach bath in the BL) and the 70BL can sleep 3 while the 70KL can sleep 2. The Boldt is all-season ready with best-in-class insulation, in-coach water lines and the Truma Combi Eco Plus heating.
