Top 10 Reasons to Buy a Winnebago Class B Camper Van

Compressor vs. Absorption Refrigerators in the Winnebago Travato

When you are packing for your next RV roadtrip…what is one of the first things you do? If you are like us…you cool down and then “overfill” the refrigerator.

RV refrigerators are available in two styles, either a compressor-powered refrigerator or an absorption refrigerator. Compressor-powered refrigerators sometimes referred to as two-way refrigerators use a small compressor unit to cool the refrigerator. Often they have two ways of powering the compressor either through 12-volt battery power or 110-volt power, hence the name two way refrigerator. The other option when looking at portable refrigerators are absorption-refrigerators. Absorption refrigerators, sometimes called three-way refrigerators, rely on a gas flow heat exchange system located in the back of the refrigerator to extract heat from the refrigerator and cool the internal temperature. Absorption refrigerators have three means of being powered; 12-volt battery power, 110-volt battery power, and LPG gas.

The Winnebago Travato is equipped with a 12-volt compressor-driven refrigerator/freezer. The Travato 59K and 59KL are equipped with a single door 4.3 cu. ft. refrigerator while the Travato 59G and 59GL floorplans are equipped  with a two-door 6.0 cu. ft. compressor-driven refrigerator.

Winnebago Travato Compressor-Driven Refrigerator

WATCH THIS VIDEO TO COMPARE COMPRESSOR REFRIGERATORS VS. ABSORPTION REFRIGERATORS

Let’s look at the pros and cons of compressor refrigerators and absorption refrigerators –

Compressor Refrigerators –

Pros:

  • Compressor refrigerators are able to chill to lower temperatures and cool more consistently than absorption refrigerators regardless of the outside ambient temperature, due to the more powerful compressor motor.
  • Most compressor refrigerators can double as freezers because of the powerful compressor motor.
  • Compressor refrigerators work well in uneven terrain, in fact most compressor refrigerators will operate just as well regardless of being flat or on an incline.
  • Compressor refrigerators are built with 12-volt power in mind, which means they run very efficiently on battery power compared to the absorption refrigerators.

Cons:

  • Though modern refrigerators are extremely quiet, there is still some audible noise when the compressor is running, similar to that of your standard home refrigerator.
  • May need solar to assist in powering the batteries which ultimately power the refrigerator.

Absorption Refrigerators –

Pros:

  • Absorption refrigerators can run for an extended period of time because they rely on the gas flow exchange system rather than 12-volt system.
  • You will not need to spend additional money on batteries and charging systems like solar power to run.
  • The heat exchange system of cooling means the refrigerator runs completely silent.

Cons:

  • Due to the gas flow exchange system, an absorption refrigerator should remain level in order to function efficiently
  • Absorption refrigerators are run mostly on gas, so users will need to ensure they have good ventilation.
  • Absorption refrigerators tend to be inefficient when running on 12-volt power and will drain the batteries much quicker than a compressor refrigerator.
  • Because absorption refrigerators tend to be more heavily affected by ambient temperatures, they are usually only able to bring internal temperatures down to a certain level below the ambient rather than being able to achieve the set specific temperature like the compressor refrigerators.

Winnebago was the first manufacturer in the industry to use Onan’s new Quiet Generator, which is about 10 decibels quieter than previous models. The Winnebago Travato 59G | 59K and the Winnebago Solis 59PX were the first products in the RV industry to use this revolutionary new generator.

Some RVers may choose Lithium for its quiet performance, for those that are conscientious about your impact on the environment yet don’t want to make the investment in Lithium, the Quiet Onan 2800i Generator is a great option.

Winnebago Class B Camper Van Lineup

Battle of the B’s: The Winnebago Travato Standard vs. Lithium

This month we are going to focus on Winnebago Class B Camper Vans, the Battle of the B’s! The Class B Camper Van market continues to grow and offers a number of different options for those looking to go where they want, when they want, in an RV.  Class B motorhomes are compact and smaller in stature compared to traditional Class A and Class C Motorhomes. Class B’s are also larger and taller than a typical full-sized van allowing space within the Class B RV for living, sleeping and a wet bath. Winnebago offers a number of different Class B van options, we will discuss the Winnebago Travato Class B Van below.

The Winnebago Travato features all-season roof and sidewall insulation. The Travato is equipped with honeycomb composite insulated flooring, above-floor waterlines, heated tanks and available dual-pane acrylic insulated windows which extend the camping season. The Travato’s Eco-Hot® water system cuts water waste and waiting time for hot water.

The Winnebago Travato is available in 2 floorplans and is built on the Ram ProMaster Chassis. This Chassis includes a Radio/Rearview Monitor System with a 7” Multimedia Touchscreen Infotainment Center and Ram ProMaster safety features including crosswind assist and blind spot monitoring. Each of the 2 floorplans in the Travato are available with or without the Lithium Power System. This system allows you extended off grid stays.

The 59G/59GL features a rear corner bed that stores upright and a dinette with 3-point seat belts. Each of the Winnebago Travato floorplans galleys includes Corian solid-surface countertop, a Flip-Up (59G/59GL) or Pull-Out countertop extension (59K/59KL) and 2-burner range LP Cooktop (59G/59K or a single burner induction cooktop (59GL/59KL.) Each Travato floorplan includes swiveling cab seats that become an integral part of the living area.

As mentioned above, each of the Travato’s floorplans is available with or without the Lithium Power System. The designation of an “L” after the floorplan denotes that it includes lithium. For instance, the Travato 59K and the Travato 59KL are identical floorplan layouts, the KL simply includes the Lithium Power system. The differences in the electrical  power systems between the standard and lithium models are listed below.

The Winnebago Travato Power System in the Travato 59KL|59GL

Battle of the B’s: Winnebago Solis vs. Winnebago Travato

2022 Winnebago Travato Model Year Changes

4-Season Features in the Winnebago Travato

Top Questions on Winnebago Class B RVs

We recently held a webcast covering the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) about Winnebago’s Class B lineup – Winnebago Travato, Revel and Boldt. You can watch the webcast here.

Read our top questions from the webcast below –

  1. In terms of the Truma System, can I use it to heat my coach when I don’t have water in the coach? Yes, it can be used if the RV is winterized.
  2. Are all Winnebago B-Vans 4-Season RVs and what does that mean? As of today, all campervans from Winnebago are four-season. While that is a loose term, for us can you use this in cooler temps? Winnebago has added automotive-grade insulation to all of the campervans and has fully enclosed pressurized water lines. The Travato and the Boldt have heating pads on the holding tanks allowing guests to dump the tanks in sub-freezing temperatures, while the Revel has a cassette toilet.
  3. How do these vans come from the OEM – Mercedes-Benz and Ram – Is Winnebago improving the insulation or any other improvements? The chassis will come as a shell, with exposed sheet metal. Winnebago adds all the insulation and builds the interior components of the campervan. Winnebago is an accredited upfitter of Mercedes-Benz and Sprinter which allows them to add functional windows, unlike some competitors.
  4. Why is my lithium pack not charging? The shut down temperature in the Pure3 system is 37 degrees and if it hits there the lithium pack will not charge.
  5. What has the best ground clearance? The Winnebago Revel has 8” of ground clearance and the Winnebago Travato has 7” of ground clearance.
  6. What is 4WD offered in? The Winnebago Revel (standard 4WD) and it is optional on the Winnebago Boldt.
  7. What are the key differences between the Winnebago Boldt and the Winnebago Era? Why is the Boldt more expensive? The Boldt has the Pure3 lithium system while the Winnebago Era has the Cummins-Onan LP generator is the key factor that drives the cost.
  8. What is the best campervan if I want to bring several passengers? The Travato and Revel have seatbelts for four while the Boldt has seat belts for up to 6.
  9. What is located under the bench seat in the Travato 59G? In non-lithium Travato it houses the freshwater tank, in the lithium Travato it houses some of the Pure3 system components.
  10. What are our guest’s overall experiences with homeowner associations (HOA) on campervans from Winnebago? Overall, they are favorable. Winnebago uses automotive-grade paint with sleek exteriors that do not look like your typical RV. We have guests that pull the small exterior graphics – like the Winnebago logo to really make the van look stealth.
  11. Will the new Eras have similar insulation to the Winnebago Boldt? Yes, it will.
  12. What is the timeframe on the Winnebago Solis? We are expecting our first Solis at the end of January 2020.
  13. How easy is it to use the pop-top in the Winnebago Solis? It is very easy to use!
  14. Will the Era have the same chassis options as the Winnebago Boldt? Yes, it will have the same creature comforts and safety features as the Winnebago Boldt.
  15. Can you use Sumo Springs on the Boldt? Yes, there are options from SumoSprings on the Mercedes-Benz chassis. However, it is one of the most comfortable, best-riding vehicle Winnebago has made.
  16. Can you install a muffler for the generator? They are typically called a resonator. They improve the exterior noise of the generator.
  17. Can I sleep with the bed in the Winnebago Revel half way up? Yes, you can use it in any position.
  18. How does grade-braking work on the Boldt? It uses the power of the transmission to assist in your braking.
  19. Where do we see the Winnebago Solis entering our lineup? We think it is a new segment based on the features. It is built to be rugged and durable with the underscore being simple.
  20. What is the fuel economy between the chassis offerings? The ProMaster is about 16 – 18 mpg and the Sprinter is typically seeing 18 – 21 mpg.
