Winnebago Travato vs. Thor Tellaro

The Winnebago Travato and Thor Tellaro are built on the RAM ProMaster® 3500 XT window van chassis, equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 gas engine. With 276 horsepower, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and 250 pound-feet of torque, this chassis guarantees that you are ready to take on everything your RVing adventures have in store. However, upon comparing the two models the build quality of the Thor Tellaro is considerably lower than that of the Winnebago Travato.

FLOORPLANS

The Winnebago Travato features two different interior layouts with the option to include the a lithium power system in either layout for a total of four floorplans, the Travato 59G, Travato 59GL, Travato 59K and Travato 59KL. For additional convenience, the 59G and 59GL floorplans feature an automotive grade dinette bench seat with two 3-point seatbelts. Another key difference between the 59G and 59K floorplans is the location of the bathroom. In the 59K and 59KL, the bathroom spans the full rear of the coach with a spacious wardrobe included inside while the 59G and 59GL have a large corner bath across from the Murphy+ bed.

The Thor Tellaro also has four floorplans with very different layouts. They include the 20A, 20J, 20K and 20L. Although none of these floorplans are similar to the layout of the Travato 59G floorplan, the Travato 59K is similar to the Tellaro 20L with two twin beds that convert to a large sleeping area, rear bath, and galley. Both the 20L and 20K have the bathroom situated at the rear while the 20A and 20J have a mid-coach restroom that is limited in space and provides very little mobility when showering.

EXTERIOR

As with any comparison between Winnebago products and other manufacturers, the level of quality insulation in the Travato is far superior to that of the Tellaro with automotive-grade, block foam insulation in both the ceilings and sidewalls. This insulation provides improved temperature control, reduces heat or cool air loss and also provides noise reduction. Comparatively, the Tellaro is not equipped with this level of insulation.

The Thor Tellaro quality and build of the screen design at the van side door is often a pain point for owners. While Winnebago’s setup includes magnetic closures that provides a fit barrier from bugs while still allowing fresh air through, the screen system on the Tellaro is far less effective. Also, the Tellaro does not include a rear screen door while the Travato includes this standard feature.

INTERIOR

A higher-quality furnishing fabric is used in the Travato than in the Tellaro. Fasteners in the Travato cabinets are reliable and will last for years to come while the quality of both the cabinets and fasteners in the Tellaro are a common source of complaints amongst owners.

Another feature highlighted in the Winnebago Travato is the coach-length, awning-style windows that provide superior cross ventilation and include blackout cassette shades for privacy. Comparatively, the a majority of the windows in the Tellaro do not open, omitting any sort of air flow throughout the coach.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The 59G and 59K floorplans include the Cummins Onan® QG 2800i gas generator as well as two deep-cycle Group 31 batteries. Instead of the generator and deep-cycle batteries, the 59GL and 59KL feature the Pure3 Energy Management System 3-module lithium-ion energy pack, a 3,200-watt inverter, energy pack heating system as well as a second dedicated alternator that is powered by the chassis engine. All four floorplans include 215-watt solar panels, a solar charge control as well as connections for additional solar panels, either portable or installed.

The Thor Tellaro also offers a lithium option which is available on any of the four floorplans. If this system is not added, the setup is comparable to the Travato 59G and 59K as it includes the Cummins Onan® QG 2800i gas generator as well as two deep-cycle Group 31 batteries. The lithium system that can be added is the Re(Li)able™ Lite Power Pack Electrical System with a lower watt inverter at 3,000-watts.

HEATING & COOLING

The Winnebago Travato 59K is equipped with the Truma Combi® Eco Plus Heating System that includes (2) 850-watt electric heating elements that offer hydronic coach heat and hot water on demand.

The Travato also includes the Coleman-Mach 10 non-ducted, quiet air conditioner that can be conveniently controlled via Bluetooth and keeps the insulated interior cool. The Coleman-Mach 10 NDQ is a 13,500 BTU air conditioner that is 4-6 decibels quieter than previous models.

In comparison, the Thor Tellaro has the Truma Combi Eco Hydronic Furnace and Water heating system as well as a 11,000-BTU traditional air conditioner that is louder and less powerful than the Travato’s system.
